Early life and background

Safiya Jaffer Nygaard was born on July 16, 1992, in Chicago, Illinois. She grew up with an interest in drama and theatre, participating in youth theatre programs while in school. Nygaard attended Whitney M. Young Magnet High School before enrolling at Stanford University, where she earned a BA in Drama and English and led the university's Ram’s Theatrical Society. During her college years she worked a variety of part-time jobs including stints as a library intern and a retail sales assistant.

Career

Nygaard began creating web content while still a student, producing a comedy web series called Tiger Dad Comedy in which she wrote, directed and produced material. After graduating she moved into digital video production and in 2015 joined BuzzFeed as a Video Production Intern. She advanced quickly at the company, serving as a Video Fellow and later as a Video Producer.

At BuzzFeed she was a founding member and co-creator of the Ladylike series, helping to produce, shoot and edit videos for the channel. Ladylike grew substantially during her time there and had amassed more than 1.7 million subscribers by 2016. Nygaard left BuzzFeed in January 2017 to concentrate on her personal YouTube channel and independent projects.

On her own channel she developed a strong reputation for beauty, fashion and lifestyle content, as well as DIY videos and challenge formats. Her channel had grown to over 4.7 million subscribers by April 2018, and she produced regular uploads, typically posting twice a week. Outside of her own YouTube work, Nygaard has worked in other production roles — including scripting and programming internships and assistant production credits — and has appeared in small acting and production projects.

Public profile

Nygaard is known for a frank, approachable presentation style and a focus on experiments, fashion and beauty content that blends humor with hands-on testing. Her creative background in theatre and practical experience in video production have shaped the mix of scripted and documentary-style videos she publishes. She has described herself as an enthusiastic fan of pop culture and is especially associated with fandoms such as Harry Potter.

Personal life

Nygaard is of mixed heritage, with Danish and Indian ancestry. Her family includes her mother, Mumtaz Nygaard, and at least one brother named Adil. While she has been publicly linked to fellow creator Tyler Williams, she is not married and does not have children.

Latest updates

After leaving BuzzFeed in January 2017, Nygaard focused full time on her own channel and independent projects. By April 2018 her channel subscriber count had surpassed 4.7 million and she continued to post frequent videos exploring fashion, beauty and DIY topics.

She has also held production and directing roles in theatre and live event settings, and has credited her theatrical training with informing her approach to performance and video work.
