Career
Safoora Zargar is described as a student activist. While at Delhi University she worked with the Women’s Development Cell and helped start a campus magazine. After completing her undergraduate studies she worked in marketing for about a year and a half before returning to Jamia Millia Islamia for postgraduate study.
During her time at Jamia she became involved in student organising and the media activities of the Jamia Coordination Committee. She took part in protests on several issues prior to 2019, including demonstrations against the Kathua rape case in 2018 and protests related to the situation in Syria. In late 2019 and early 2020 she emerged as a visible participant in demonstrations opposing the Citizenship Amendment Act in Delhi and the National Capital Region.
Legal cases and controversies
Zargar’s role in anti-CAA protests drew police attention during a period of unrest in Delhi. Following clashes at Jaffrabad and events in February 2020 that the police say resulted in significant violence and loss of life, her name was included in an FIR and she was arrested at her Delhi residence on 10 April 2020. The police described her as a key conspirator in the incidents around Jaffrabad metro station in February 2020.
After her arrest she was produced before a magistrate and remanded in police custody. She was granted bail on 13 April 2020 in one matter but was rearrested the same day in a separate case. She was sent to Tihar Jail on 15 April 2020. Additional charges were framed against her by the Delhi Police on 20 April 2020.
Among the charges listed against Zargar by law-enforcement authorities are multiple offences related to rioting and incitement during the protests; some cases included allegations under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. Her detention attracted public attention in part because she was reportedly pregnant at the time of arrest; the Delhi High Court later granted bail in June 2020 on medical grounds related to her pregnancy and other health concerns.
Developments in the legal process continued into 2023. A trial court discharged Zargar and several others in a case related to violence, but the Delhi Police challenged that order. In March 2023 the Delhi High Court set aside the trial court’s discharge of Zargar and others, finding that available video evidence and other material warranted further legal consideration.
Public profile
Zargar has been widely identified in media coverage as a student leader associated with the anti-CAA movement in Delhi. Her profile includes references to campus activism, public speaking at demonstrations and work with student groups. Reporting about her has included accounts of both her activist activities and the criminal cases brought by the Delhi Police.
She is described as having dark hair and dark eyes and is listed at approximately 163 cm (5 feet 4 inches) in height. Publicly shared preferences attributed to her include a fondness for Maggi noodles, the novelist George R. R. Martin and the football club Chelsea.
