Sagar Ahlawat is an Indian super-heavyweight boxer from Dhandlan village in Jhajjar, Haryana. A late starter in the sport, he rose through national junior,
Early life and backgroundSagar Ahlawat was born on 7 July 2000 in Dhandlan village, Jhajjar district, Haryana. He grew up in a farming family; his father Rajesh Ahlawat worked as a farmer and his mother is Mukesh Ahlawat. Sagar attended Brigadier Ran Singh Public School in Dojhana-n and later studied at Goswami Ganesh Dutta Sanatan Dharma College in Chandigarh, where he completed a Bachelor of Arts degree.
Unlike many elite athletes who begin training as children, Sagar discovered boxing after completing class 12. A newspaper account of the Floyd Mayweather–Manny Pacquiao fight sparked his interest in the sport. He joined the Jawahar Bagh stadium training centre in Jhajjar and began working under coach Hitesh Deswal. While training, he continued to help on the family farm and balanced long, disciplined practice sessions with agricultural duties.
Career
Sagar competes in the over-92 kg (plus 92 kg) super-heavyweight division and fights from a southpaw stance. His international debut came at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, where he reached the final and won a silver medal in the super-heavyweight category.
Before his breakthrough at the Commonwealth Games, Sagar built a record across junior, university and national competitions. In 2018 he won gold at the 44th Junior Men State Boxing Championship in Haryana and the 47th Junior (Youth) Men National Boxing Championship. He took gold at the All-India University Championship in 2019 and won PU Inter-College Boxing Championship titles in 2020 and 2021. At the senior national level he earned a silver at the 5th Elite National Championship in Bellary in 2021.
Sagar progressed through India’s national system, training at the national camp in Patiala. At the 2022 national selection trials in Patiala he recorded wins over established Indian heavyweights including Satish Kumar and Narender Berwal, results that helped secure his place on the Commonwealth Games team.
Training and style
Coached by Hitesh Deswal and also worked with Virender Dangi, Sagar is known for a rigorous training regimen. His coach has described sessions that tested stamina and resilience, including multiple rounds against different partners and long runs—sometimes with added resistance—as part of a daily routine of morning, afternoon and evening training. Those sessions were balanced with the physical work he did on his family’s small farm, which his family say helped build his work ethic.
Public profile
Sagar is identified with Jhajjar, Haryana, and his physical profile lists a height of 180 cm (about 5'11") and a competition weight around 90 kg. He has black hair and black eyes and fights out of the super-heavyweight division for India. His favourite boxer is Satish Kumar and he enjoys traditional regional foods such as churma with tomato chutney.
Family and community
Sagar’s family played an active role in his development. His father supported his diet and equipment needs even while the young athlete balanced training with farm duties. After his success at the Commonwealth Games, family members described plans for him to follow village traditions of visiting local ashrams and temples to seek blessings.
