Early life and background

Sahaj Singh Chahal was born on 7 November 1991 in Delhi. He grew up wanting to be a dancer and began formal dance training at the age of eight. By his mid-teens he was already teaching: at 15 he worked as a dance instructor at Shiamak Davar’s Institute of Performing Arts in Delhi.

Chahal spent part of his childhood working as a child model in television commercials for brands such as Hyundai, Shell Engine Oil, Ranbaxy, LG and others, and appeared in print advertising as well. These early experiences in front of the camera and onstage helped shape his path into professional choreography and performance.

Career

Chahal’s career spans choreography, acting and direction. He co-founded a dance studio in July 2013 with a friend, initially called Urban Dance Centre and later renamed Urban Singh Crew in 2015. The studio and its team—Urban Dance Group or Urban Singh Crew—competed on several televised dance platforms, including Dance Premier League (2009), Dil Se Naachein Indiawaale (2014) where they reached the Top 10, and Dance Plus Season 2 (2016).

As a choreographer he worked across Punjabi and Hindi music and film. His choreography on the Punjabi track that brought him wide attention was the 2017 song “Naah Goriye,” which featured Nora Fatehi and was sung by Harrdy Sandhu. He went on to choreograph several other Punjabi hits including “Kya Baat Aye,” “She Move It Like,” “Buzz,” “Nikle Currant,” “Laare” and “Bad Munda.”

In Bollywood he contributed choreography to feature films such as Manmarziyaan (2018), Welcome To New York (2018), Jai Mummy Di (2020), Bhangra Paa Le (2020), Street Dancer 3D (2020) and Kya Meri Sonam Gupta Bewafa Hai? (2021). He has also staged performances for major award shows and televised finales, working on events such as the PTC Film Awards, PTC Music Awards and Mirchi Music Awards (North), and choreographing finales for PTC Punjabi reality shows including Voice Of Punjab and Laughter Da Master.

Chahal moved into directing music videos beginning with the Punjabi video “Kudi Kudi” (2018). He later directed additional Punjabi and Haryanvi videos, including “Desi Katta” (2019), “Mere Yaar” (2019) and “Johnny Walker” (2020).

Acting and on-screen work

His feature film acting debut came with Bhangra Paa Le (2020). He subsequently appeared in Rocket Gang (2022) in the role of Sahib. On screen he has also been part of music videos across languages, with credits on songs such as “Mummy Nu Pasand Nahi Tu” (2019), “Wah Wai Wah” (2019), “Valentine Mashup” (2022), “Bahek Jane Do” (2023) and “Holi Re Rasiya” (2023).

In 2023 he expanded into web-series work, playing the character Neel in the Hindi series Campus Beats, which premiered on Amazon miniTV.
