Early life and background

Bharadwaj Sai Sudharsan was born on 15 October 2001 in Venkatesa Agraharam, Mylapore, Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Raised in a sporting household, his father Bharadwaj R was an international athlete and his mother Alagu Usha Bharadwaj competed in volleyball at the state level and worked as a strength and conditioning coach. Sai attended DAV School and Santhome Higher Secondary School in Chennai and went on to earn a Bachelor of Commerce from Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda College. He grew up in Chennai and developed an early interest in cricket, often practising with a tennis ball alongside his brother Sairam Bharadwaj.

Career

Sai progressed through Tamil Nadu’s age-group sides, representing the state at Under-14, Under-16 and Under-19 levels. His performances in local club cricket — including stints with Alwarpet CC and Jolly Rovers in the TNCA divisions — helped him build a reputation as a prolific run-scorer. In 2017 he featured for Triplicane Friends United Cricket Club in the TNCA third division, and in 2019 he played in national age-group competitions such as the Vijay Merchant and Vinnoo Mankad tournaments, where he posted centuries.

He first caught wider attention in the Tamil Nadu Premier League. Acquired by Chepauk Super Gillies in 2019 (though he did not play that season), Sai made a strong impact after joining Lyca Kovai Kings. In 2020 he announced himself in the TNPL with an aggressive 87 off 43 balls against Salem Spartans. The 2021 TNPL season saw him finish as the tournament’s highest run-scorer, accumulating 358 runs in eight matches at a striking rate above 140, performances that prompted public praise from established players.

At domestic level Sai made steady strides across formats. He debuted in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy T20 competition for Tamil Nadu in April 2021 and contributed to the team’s tournament win. He made his Vijay Hazare Trophy (List A) debut for Tamil Nadu in December 2021. In November 2022 he was part of a record-setting opening partnership in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, scoring 154 off 102 balls as he and Narayan Jagadeesan put on 416 for the first wicket — a partnership and team total that set new List A benchmarks.

Sai’s red-ball credentials grew in the 2022 Ranji Trophy season when he scored 179 and 42 on his first-class debut for Tamil Nadu against Hyderabad.
