Early life and background
Sai Varshith Kandula was born in 2004 and raised in Chesterfield, Missouri. He is identified as Indian-American and comes from a Telugu family. Kandula completed his secondary education at Marquette High School in St. Louis County, graduating in 2022. According to information he has shared professionally, he pursued certificate courses in data analytics through programs offered by Google and IBM and lists programming skills that include Python and Java.

Career
Kandula’s stated professional interest is in data analysis. His public profile indicates he has pursued training and certifications intended to prepare him for work in that field. Beyond those certificate programs and the programming skills he lists, the available information does not describe an employment history or specific professional roles.

Public profile
During his time at Marquette High School Kandula participated in student council, serving on that body in his sophomore year. Friends and acquaintances described him as reserved and introverted; one friend noted he enjoyed playing tennis and tended not to engage in extended conversations.

Legal matter and public attention
On May 22, 2023, Kandula drew national attention when he drove a rented U-Haul truck into the security barriers at Lafayette Square near the White House in Washington, D.C. He was taken into custody at the scene. Authorities reported he had traveled from St. Louis to the Washington area on a one-way ticket and rented the vehicle in Virginia. Law enforcement recovered items in the vehicle that included a flag bearing a swastika, duct tape, a backpack, and a notebook described during the investigation.

Following his arrest, federal authorities filed charges that included threats against the president or vice president, assault with a dangerous weapon, reckless driving, trespassing, and destruction of federal property. The complaint stated the barriers sustained more than $1,000 in damage. During questioning, Kandula referred to a “green book” that he said contained notes and plans related to the incident; he also indicated he expected to be arrested. Reports from the investigation included statements about his intent and his view that his actions had communicated a message to federal authorities.

Public reaction and context
Reporting around the incident noted statements attributed to Kandula about historical figures and movements, and some media coverage described admiration he expressed for Adolf Hitler and a romanticized view of Nazi history during interviews with investigators. At least one friend disputed labels linking him to white supremacist or neo-Nazi organizations. These matters were part of the public record produced during and after the law enforcement investigation.
