Sai Vignesh Biography

Sai Vignesh is a Chennai-born Carnatic vocalist, playback singer and music teacher who gained wider recognition for his work across Tamil, Telugu andKannad

Early life and background

Sai Vignesh Ramakrishnan was born on 20 November 1996 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. He grew up in a family with a strong musical presence: his father, Ramakrishnan Venkatachalam, is a keyboard player, and his grandmother V. Vijaylakshami was a singer. Those early household influences, along with devotional singing in the Sathya Sai community, shaped his interest in music from childhood.

Sai trained in Carnatic music for nearly eighteen years under teachers including Lakshmi Ananthakrishnan and T. R. Vasudevan. He attended schools in Chennai before completing a Bachelor of Commerce and later a Master of Music in Vocal Performance. Alongside formal studies, his earliest public performances included devotional programs and a first jingle recorded while he was in Class 8.

Career

Sai Vignesh began his public singing journey on television as a contestant in Airtel Super Singer Season 4 (2013) on Star Vijay. He later transitioned into playback singing and concert performance, working in multiple South Indian languages and across genres that bridge classical and contemporary styles.

His recorded film work includes the Tamil song "Oora Nenjila" from Eghantham (2018), the Tamil theme "Kaalai Theme" for Kadaikutty Singam, the Telugu songs "Anuragam Ashai" for Darunam and "Kurumugil" for Sita Ramam (which drew positive attention in 2022), and the Kannada track "Varaha Roopam" for Kantara (2022). The latter brought him considerable notice; Sai has said the song was an opportunity to sing a classically rooted piece with modern production, and that he learned the Kannada lyrics specifically for the recording.

Beyond films, Sai performs live frequently. His first major concert abroad took place in London for Britain’s 18th Saiva Conference in May 2017. Since then he has given over a thousand live performances in India and internationally, appearing in countries such as the United States, Canada, Singapore, Australia and Germany. He has shared stages with established artists including Ilaiyaraaja, S. P. Balasubrahmanyam and Shankar Mahadevan.

Sai is also active as a music educator and mentor, offering training both in-person and online. He is an empanelled artist with the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) and in 2020 co-founded Gandiva, an Indo-classical contemporary fusion band based in Chennai. Gandiva’s first video, a rendition of "Shiva Tandava" released in January 2021, surpassed one million views on YouTube.

Recognition and awards

Across competitions and festivals, Sai has received several honours acknowledging his classical training and concert work. Early in his career he won the Sing with Shankar Mahadevan contest in 2014 and performed with Shankar Mahadevan. He has been recognised at events such as the Times of India Thyagaraja Awards, the TAG Carnatic Music Forum, and The Music Academy’s Spirit of Youth Festival. The All India Radio panel graded him as a B-High artist in the music category.

Public profile

Sai identifies primarily as a Carnatic musician who also works in playback and contemporary formats. He lists influences such as Dr. S. P. Balasubrahmanyam and expresses admiration for filmmakers like Gautham Menon. His YouTube channel features covers and original uploads; his unplugged version of "Varaha Roopam" quickly attracted significant views when posted in December 2022. Sai has contributed to more than 500 recording sessions with various composers and has worked with major music directors across the industry.

Controversy

Following the release of Kantara in September 2022, the song "Varaha Roopam" was the subject of a copyright dispute between the film’s producers and a Kerala-based band. Courts temporarily ordered the removal of the track from platforms before later lifting the ban. Sai publicly stated that he did not listen to the other band’s work prior to recording and that the two pieces differ in mood and musical basis.

Latest updates

In 2022 Sai judged an online Tamil singing competition called Kuralosai 916 and continued releasing content on his self-titled YouTube channel. He remains active as a performer, teacher and content creator, balancing classical concert work with film songs and collaborative projects such as Gandiva.
