Saina Nehwal Biography

Saina Nehwal is an Indian badminton player and politician from Hisar, Haryana. A pioneering figure in Indian badminton, she has multiple international wins

Early life and background
Saina Nehwal was born on 17 March 1990 in Hisar, Haryana, and later moved with her family to Hyderabad when she was a child. She grew up in a household with a strong connection to sport: both her parents were state-level badminton players for Haryana. Her formal schooling included Campus School at CCS HAU in Hisar and institutions in Hyderabad such as Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan Public School, the National Institute of Rural Development School at Rajendranagar, and St. Ann’s College for Women. She completed education up to the 12th standard.

Nehwal took up badminton at a young age on the suggestion of coach Nani Prasad Rao. Her father supported her training from an early stage, transporting her over long distances so she could practice. She trained at the Gopichand Badminton Academy under several coaches during her development, including S. M. Arif, Pullela Gopichand, Nani Prasad Rao, and Vimal Kumar.

Career
Saina Nehwal made her international debut at the Asian Badminton Satellite tournament in 2005 and quickly rose through junior ranks. A key turning point came when she became the under-19 national champion in 2006. That same period saw her win the Asian Satellite tournament twice and the Philippines Open, achievements that marked her out on the continental circuit.

Over the following decade and more, Nehwal established herself as one of India’s most decorated badminton players. She became the first Indian to win the World Junior Badminton Championships and was the first Indian woman to reach the Olympic quarter-finals in women’s singles. Her victories span major events such as the Indonesia Open, Singapore Open Super Series, Swiss Open, China Open Super Series Premier, Denmark Open Super Series, Australia Open Super Series, and the India Super Series. She also won medals at multi-sport events, earning Commonwealth Games gold and team medals, and bronze at the Asian Games.

Nehwal reached several important milestones for Indian badminton: she was the first Indian to win a BWF Super Series title, the first Indian woman to reach the All England Open final, and the first Indian woman to achieve the world number one ranking in women’s singles in the Badminton World Federation. She continued to add to her medal collection with podium finishes at World Championships and other top-tier tournaments.

Her career included periods affected by injury, particularly in 2016 and 2017, which limited her tournament play. Amidst competition and recovery, she remained a prominent presence on the international circuit and continued to collect titles into later years.

Public profile
Beyond the court, Nehwal has authored an autobiography titled Playing to Win: My Life On and Off Court. She has appeared on television programmes and on magazine covers, and has been named to roles beyond competition, including appointment to the International Olympic Committee’s Athletes’ Commission in October 2016. She has endorsed numerous brands across categories such as consumer goods, banking, sports equipment and technology, and several companies have used her as a public face.

Her personal interests include travel and a fondness for dogs. She holds a brown belt in karate. Nehwal has also had vehicles noted among her possessions, including a BMW and a Mercedes-Benz AMG GLE 53 reportedly purchased in November 2023.

Politics
In January 2020, Saina Nehwal entered active politics by joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead of the Delhi Assembly elections. She cited inspiration from the party leadership and an interest in serving the country as reasons for her decision.
