Early life and background

Saira Shah Halim was born on 27 February 1978 in Command Hospital, Kolkata, West Bengal. She grew up in an army family and moved frequently during her childhood as her father served in the Indian Army. Schooling included the International Indian School in Riyadh and Lawrence School, Lovedale; she later attended Sophia Girls’ College in Ajmer and the Faculty of Arts at Annamalai University, where she completed an M.A. in English.

Her family has long ties to public life: her father is Lt. Gen. Zameer Uddin Shah and her extended family includes artists and public figures. She is married to Dr Fuad Halim and the couple live in Kolkata.

Career

Saira Shah’s professional life has spanned corporate training, theatre, education and social activism. She began a corporate career in 2006 with Wipro and worked in training, learning and development roles at other large organisations thereafter. As a behavioural trainer and theatre artist she has run reading, creative writing and poetry workshops at national and international levels.

In the arts, Shah has acted in at least one short film that carried a social theme. She is active in Kolkata’s literary and cultural scene: she has organised cultural and literary programmes, spoken at the Kolkata Literary Meet on multiple occasions, chaired sessions at the Tata Steel Kolkata Literary Meet, and taken part in Sampark Literary Evening. She has delivered talks at events including TEDx sessions and an Independence Day talk at Oakridge International School in Mohali.

Public service and activism have been consistent features of her work. Shah is associated with the West Bengal Federation of United Nations Association and has been a long-standing member of the Rotary Club of Ballygunge. Her activism includes public opposition to the Citizenship Amendment Act and related policies, and she has spoken on issues such as the hijab ban in educational institutions. She is a founder of Poetry Paradigm, a Kolkata-based non-profit focused on poetry and related cultural activities, and has worked with Poetry Couture to revive public readings.

On 29 March 2022 she was announced as the CPI(M) candidate for the Ballygunge Assembly bypolls held in April 2022 to fill the vacancy left by the passing of a senior Trinamool Congress leader. Her campaign included door-to-door outreach and street-level canvassing in Kolkata.

She has described growing up with political conversations around the family table and framed her candidacy as a continuation of long-standing political engagement rather than a sudden step into public life. Shah also supported and managed her husband’s campaign when he contested the West Bengal assembly election from Ballygunge in 2021.

On the cultural front, Shah has organised and hosted poetry and literary events, been invited to speak at literary festivals, and contributed to local cultural publications. She lists travel, music, reading and theatre among her personal interests.
