Sajid Khan was an Indian actor and singer who began his career as a child artist in Mehboob Khan’s Mother India (1957). He won popularity in international,
Early life and backgroundSajid Khan was born on 28 December 1951 in Bombay, Bombay State, India. He came from humble beginnings in the Mastan Talav area near Chor Bazaar and was discovered as a child for a role in the film Mother India. Filmmaker Mehboob Khan and his wife Sardar Akhtar took him into their care, and he became known in some records as Sajid Mehboob.
Career
Sajid’s screen debut came as the young Birju in the 1957 Academy Award–nominated Hindi film Mother India. That early role led to further work in his foster father’s projects, including a part in Son of India (1962). After Mehboob Khan’s death in 1964, Sajid spent time in the United States to continue his education and to pursue work in film and television.
In the mid-to-late 1960s Sajid found significant visibility outside India. He co-starred with Jay North in the film Maya, and when the project was adapted into a television series it ran on NBC from 1967 to 1968, with Sajid appearing as the character Raji across 18 episodes. Maya and related appearances, including a guest role on The Big Valley and an appearance as a guest judge on the music show It’s Happening, brought him international attention and brief teen-idol status in markets such as the United States, France, Japan, Mexico, Germany, Thailand, and parts of Asia.
Alongside acting, Sajid explored music. He released a self-titled album in 1969 whose tracks included covers and interpretations of contemporary songs; two of his recordings, Getting to Know You and Dream, placed on the US Billboard listings in 1969. He also found a following in Japan, where his American records were released and he recorded a single in Japanese for RCA Records.
During the early 1970s Sajid worked in the Philippines, appearing as the male lead in several romantic comedies opposite prominent local actresses. He continued to act in Hindi cinema through the 1970s and early 1980s, appearing in films such as Mahatma and the Mad Boy (1974), Zindagi Aur Toofan (1975), Mandir Masjid (1977), Dahshat (1981) and others. He had a small, uncredited role in the Merchant Ivory film Heat and Dust (1983), playing a brief silent part as a dacoit chief. His last listed film credit was Pilak (2001), and he also appeared on television in the series 1857 Kranti (2000).
Public profile
Sajid’s career peaked between roughly 1966 and 1974, with more of his notable success coming from English-language productions and foreign markets than from later Hindi releases. He earned recognition as a youthful screen presence and, for a time, as a singer with international releases. In 1969 he won a Teena Award for Best Actor.
Personal life
Sajid married and had one son, Sameer. He divorced his first wife in 1990 and later remarried. His son has said that Sajid settled in Kerala with his second wife in later years. Sajid’s foster parentage by Mehboob Khan and Sardar Akhtar is part of his early life story; other records indicate he was also adopted by Rajkumar Pitamber Rana and Sunita Pitamber.
Death and legacy
Sajid Khan died on 22 December 2023 in Kerala, India, at the age of 71. Reports state the cause of death was cancer. He was buried at the Kayamkulam Town Juma Masjid in Alappuzha district, Kerala. His international work in film, television and music—especially the visibility he gained in the late 1960s—remains a distinct chapter of his life and career.
Latest updates
Soon after his death, his son Sameer spoke to media about Sajid’s later life in Kerala and his philanthropic interests. Sajid had not been active in films for some time before his passing and had spent periods living in India and abroad.
