Early life and background

Saket Gokhale was born in 1988 in Nasik (also referred to as Nashik), Mumbai, and raised in a family that includes his father Suhas Gokhale, a retired police officer who served as a senior inspector at the Anti Narcotic Cell, his mother Neela Gokhale, and a younger sister, Shruti Gokhale. He completed studies in journalism and media between 2004 and 2007 and attended Wilson College in Mumbai. His education also includes courses at Trinity College, London, and the Prague School in the Czech Republic.

Career

Gokhale began his working life outside India, taking a position as an English teacher in Mlada Boleslav, Czech Republic, in April 2008. That same year he began work as an independent foreign correspondent covering Europe and South Asia. In October 2009 he joined Debtwire, part of the Financial Times Group, as a South Asia correspondent.

Over the following decade he held a variety of media and communications roles. In 2011 he volunteered as a management and restructuring consultant with Ladakh Hilfe/REWA Society in Leh, Ladakh. He moved into digital content and brand strategy in Mumbai, serving as Head of Brand Content Strategy at Flarepath Digital beginning in April 2014. In July 2015 he became Creative Director and Head of Content (Digital Quotient) at HT Media Ltd in New Delhi, a role he held until February 2017.

After leaving HT Media, Gokhale shifted his focus to public-interest work and activism, concentrating on the Right to Information (RTI) mechanism and litigation. By 2021 he had filed more than 50 RTI requests. He has brought public-interest litigation in higher courts on issues ranging from disclosure of assets to pandemic-era public gatherings. Notable actions include a petition in the Supreme Court concerning discrepancies he alleged in land property disclosures in Gujarat, and a plea in the Allahabad High Court objecting to a large gathering at a ground-breaking ceremony in Ayodhya during the COVID-19 pandemic. He also petitioned the Bombay High Court seeking the suspension of the chairperson of the Ministry of Women & Child Development’s advisory body, arguing against what he described as promotion of a theory called "love jihad." In 2021 he wrote to the Maharashtra Home Minister questioning procurement of Remdesivir by a political leader during the pandemic.

Public profile

Gokhale is active on social media and has used online fundraising to support his work; in 2020 he raised funds through a platform called Our Democracy to support his public-interest efforts. He has been vocal in his political views, expressing criticism of the Bharatiya Janata Party and support for the Indian National Congress in his public posts. He has also spoken publicly about personal experiences related to his activism, including receiving threats he reported after legal actions and media appearances.

Personal life and interests

Gokhale is unmarried and has no children. He is an animal lover who keeps dogs and cats; one of his dogs is named Layla. Languages he speaks include English, German, Hindi, Czech and Marathi. In leisure he enjoys reading and listening to rock music and has cited admiration for the singer Bob Dylan. Physical details recorded include an approximate height of 170 cm (about 5'7"), black hair and black eyes. He follows a non-vegetarian diet and the biographical records note an affiliation with Hinduism and a Brahmin caste background.

Health and family matters

In December 2020 Gokhale was hospitalized after experiencing chest pain and breathlessness and was reported to have suffered a mild cardiac arrest. Separately, his father Suhas was arrested on the day of his retirement in 2015 in connection with alleged contact with a drug dealer; after nearly four years the father was removed from the charge sheet and found not guilty of the accusations.
