Saleem Azeez Ahmed was born on 1 January 1967 in Bangalore, Karnataka. He attended Basaveshwara Boys High School in Rajajinagar and later studied at Seshadripuram College, Bengaluru. He holds a Bachelor of Arts and an M.A. in Political Science from institutions that include Karnataka State Open University, Mysore. Growing up in Bangalore, Ahmed took an early interest in student and youth politics.

Career

Ahmed’s political career began in student organisations. In 1982 he was elected student union leader at Sheshadripuram College. He went on to hold leadership roles in the National Students' Union of India (NSUI), becoming vice president of Bangalore City NSUI in 1984 and later serving as Karnataka NSUI president. He also served as general secretary of the All India Youth Congress and was active in youth-focused outreach and social programs.

He first entered the Karnataka Legislative Council in 1996 and was re-elected to serve through multiple terms. Ahmed held the post of Government Chief Whip in the Karnataka Legislative Council from 2000 to 2007. Over the years he also served on various legislative committees and represented his party in national-level Congress bodies.

At the national level, Ahmed served as Director General of Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan in the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports from 2012 to 2014. In that role he emphasised building a network of rural and suburban youth clubs, promoting community-based organisations, and designing initiatives for skill and employment development among young people. He travelled as part of official study and exchange delegations, including visits to the United States, China, Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea, Russia and the World Kannada Conference in Detroit.

Within the Congress party organisation, Ahmed has held several posts: special representative of the Government of Karnataka to the Union Government (25 January 2017–21 June 2018), AICC secretary for Telangana (21 June 2018–11 March 2020), and a working president of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee from 11 March 2020. On 6 January 2022 he was elected as a Member of the Karnataka Legislative Council representing the Hubli–Dharwad, Haveri and Gadag districts.
