Salhoutuonuo Kruse was born in Nagaland in 1967 and is from Chümoukedima. She completed her pre-university studies in the arts at Kohima College in 1986 and attended Ministers’ Hill Baptist Higher Secondary School in Kohima. She is a Christian.

Career

Kruse’s public life spans social activism, entrepreneurship and electoral politics. For several years she has been active with non-governmental organisations in Nagaland and worked on issues relating to women’s rights. Between 2011 and 2014 she served as chair of Angamimiapfu Mechu Krotho, a women’s rights group that is now known as the Angami Women Organization.

Beyond activism, Kruse is an entrepreneur with business interests in education and hospitality in Nagaland. She runs multiple hotels and girls’ hostels in Dimapur and is the proprietor of North Town Higher Secondary School in Chümoukedima.

Political career

Kruse entered formal politics after the death of her husband in 2021, joining the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP). In 2023 she received the NDPP ticket to contest the Nagaland Legislative Assembly election from the 8 Western Angami constituency. She won that contest by a margin of seven votes, becoming, alongside Hekani Jakhalu, one of the first women elected to the Nagaland Legislative Assembly.

On 7 March 2023 she was sworn in as a minister at a ceremony in Shillong attended by the Prime Minister, becoming Nagaland’s first woman minister.
