Early life and background

Ahmed Salman Rushdie was born on 19 June 1947 in Bombay (now Mumbai) in what was then British India. He comes from a Muslim family of Kashmiri heritage and spent his early schooling at the Cathedral and John Connon School in Bombay before moving to England for further education. Rushdie attended Rugby School in Warwickshire and went on to King's College, Cambridge, where he completed a master’s degree in history in 1968.

Career

Rushdie began his professional life with a variety of jobs before establishing himself as a writer. He worked in advertising as a copywriter for agencies including Ogilvy & Mather and Ayer Barker, producing commercial slogans, and he also tried his hand at acting and television production early on. His first novel, Grimus, appeared in 1975 but did not sell well.

His breakthrough came with his second novel, Midnight's Children, published in 1981. That book won the Man Booker Prize and brought him international recognition. Over the following decades Rushdie produced a steady stream of fiction and non-fiction, including Shame (1983), The Jaguar Smile (1987), and later works such as The Moor’s Last Sigh, East, West, and The Ground Beneath Her Feet. He is known for blending elements of magical realism with historical fiction, often exploring migrations, cultural connections and disruptions between East and West.

The 1988 novel The Satanic Verses provoked a major international controversy and led to threats against his life. The reaction to that book forced Rushdie to live for a prolonged period under police protection. Despite these dangers, he continued to write and also published children’s stories during those years.

Rushdie’s writing and public engagement have been recognized with many honors. He received the Booker Prize for Midnight’s Children and was later named the “Booker of Bookers” on the prize’s twenty-fifth anniversary. He has also been awarded distinctions such as the French title Commandeur de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, the European Union’s Aristeion Prize, and the Golden Pen Award. In June 2023 he was awarded a German prize acknowledging both his literary work and his resilience.

Public profile

Across his career Rushdie has been an outspoken public intellectual. He served as head of PEN American Center from 2004 to 2006 and founded the PEN World Voices Festival. He has frequently spoken about secular humanism, cultural relativism and the importance of critical debate about national, familial and religious narratives. In interviews he has described his own stance as secular and critical of supernatural claims.

Rushdie has appeared on screen and in film projects intermittently, including small roles and appearances in Bridget Jones’s Diary (2001), Then She Found Me (2007), and television programs such as Real Time with Bill Maher and Curb Your Enthusiasm. A film adaptation of Midnight’s Children was released in 2012.

Personal life

Rushdie holds British nationality and has lived in Cambridge, England. He has been married several times and is listed as divorced in public records. He is a father to two sons, Zafar (born 1979) and Milan (born 1997). His parents were Anis Ahmed Rushdie, a lawyer-turned-businessman, and Negin Bhatt, a teacher. He has one brother and three sisters.

Health and later years

In 1999 Rushdie underwent surgery for ptosis, a condition affecting the muscles that raise the eyelid, and has spoken about the necessity of that operation. Over time his hair has been described as salt-and-pepper and his eye colour as grey; his height is listed at approximately 170 cm (about 5'7").

Latest updates

Rushdie continues to be active as a writer and public figure. In 2008 he was ranked among Times Magazine’s fifty greatest British writers, and in 2023 he received a German prize recognizing his literary contributions and his stance in the face of ongoing threats. He remains a prominent voice on issues of free expression, literature and the intersection of cultures.
