Early life and background

Samantha May Kerr OAM was born on 10 September 1993 in East Fremantle, Perth, Western Australia. Raised in East Fremantle, she attended Samson Primary School and Somerville Baptist College (now Kennedy Baptist College) and completed her High School Certificate. Kerr comes from a sporting family: her father, Roger Kerr, and brother Daniel Kerr both played Australian rules football. She grew up playing Australian Rules Football before focusing on soccer in her teens.

Career

Kerr began her junior career with Western Knights before moving to Perth Glory in 2008. She made her W-League debut as a winger on 5 December 2009 for Perth Glory against Melbourne Victory. After spells at Sydney FC and Western New York Flash, she transitioned from the wing to a central striker role, a change that preceded some of her most prolific seasons.

Her club career has included Perth Glory, Sydney FC, Western New York Flash, Sky Blue FC/NJ/NY Gotham FC, Chicago Red Stars and Chelsea. She has worn the number 20 jersey for both Australia and Chelsea.

She has been Australia’s all-time leading international female scorer, and she reached multiple national scoring milestones including the country’s most goals at the Olympics and a World Cup match record when she scored four goals in a single FIFA Women’s World Cup game in 2019. She scored her first international goal at the 2010 AFC Women’s Asian Cup and recorded her first international hat-trick against Japan in July 2017 during the Tournament of Nations.
