Early life and background
Sam Manekshaw was born on 3 April 1914 in Amritsar, Punjab. He attended Sherwood College in Nainital and later studied at Hindu Sabha College in Amritsar. He was part of the first intake of the Indian Military Academy in Dehradun in 1932, a cohort commonly referred to as the Pioneers.

Career
Manekshaw was commissioned into the army and served from 1932 until his death in 2008. His early service included attachments to British-era units such as the Royal Scots and the 12th Frontier Force Regiment. Over a long career he served with the 5th and 8th Gorkha Rifles and commanded formations including the 167th Infantry Brigade and the 26th Infantry Division.

He saw action in multiple major conflicts: World War II, the communal violence and fighting around Partition in 1947, the Sino-Indian conflict of 1962, and the wars between India and Pakistan in 1965 and 1971. For his service in World War II he was awarded the Military Cross in 1942 along with other campaign medals from that period.

Manekshaw rose through the senior ranks and was appointed Chief of Army Staff on 8 July 1969. In the months leading up to the 1971 India–Pakistan war he argued for adequate preparation time for the army; that readiness and planning contributed to operations that culminated in the creation of Bangladesh in December 1971. In January 1973, at the time of his retirement, he was promoted to the rank of Field Marshal, becoming the first officer of independent India to hold that rank.

Honours and recognitions
Across his career Manekshaw received numerous military awards and Indian civilian honours. Notable decorations listed for him include the Padma Bhushan in 1968 and the Padma Vibhushan in 1972. His service medals reflect the span of his career from the World War II era through post-independence operations.

Manekshaw was widely known for a frank, forthright style and for defending the institutional interests and dignity of the Army. He was prepared to push back against political decisions when he felt they compromised military effectiveness. Manekshaw married Silloo Manekshaw (also known as Silloo Bode) on 22 April 1939. The couple had two daughters, Sherry Batliwala and Maja Daruwala. He was the son of Hormusji Manekshaw, a doctor, and his mother Hilla. He came from a sizable family that included brothers and sisters engaged in professions such as engineering, medicine and teaching.

Later years and legacy
In his later life he lived in Tamil Nadu. He died on 27 June 2008 in the military hospital at Wellington, Tamil Nadu, from acute bronchopneumonia. His death prompted strong public reaction and debate about the scale and location of the final rites. In the years following his passing, commemorations included a postage stamp issued in December 2008 and statues unveiled in Pune and at the Manekshaw Auditorium in New Delhi. A flyover in Ahmedabad was named after him in September 2008.

Manekshaw’s wartime leadership and public persona continued to draw attention decades after his retirement. Filmmakers announced projects based on his life, and senior military leaders have cited him among figures deserving of India’s highest civic honours.
