Samantha Ruth Prabhu was born on 28 April 1987 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. She grew up partly at her maternal grandmother's home in Alappuzha, Kerala, before the family moved back to Chennai for her schooling. Samantha attended Holy Angels Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School in Chennai and went on to study commerce at Stella Maris College. During the same period director Gautham Menon noticed Samantha and cast her as the lead in Ye Maaya Chesave opposite Naga Chaitanya. That film completed shooting and released in 2010 before Moscowin Kaveri, making it her debut release. Her performance in Ye Maaya Chesave earned her the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut.

After those two early successes, Samantha continued to work across Tamil and Telugu films.
