Samaresh Majumdar Biography
Samaresh Majumdar was a prolific Bengali novelist and writer known for political novels, a long-running detective series, and more than two hundred books.
Early life and backgroundSamaresh Majumdar was born on 10 March 1944 in Jalpaiguri, in what was then the Bengal Province of British India. He spent his childhood in the tea garden region of the Duars in Jalpaiguri and later made Kolkata his hometown. He completed his school education at Jalpaiguri Zilla School and went on to study Bengali literature, earning a BA from Scottish Church College and an MA from the University of Calcutta.
Career
Majumdar began publishing in the late 1960s. His early work included the novel Dour (Run), which appeared in print in 1967 and was published in Desh magazine in 1976. He initially worked for a short time in the Income Tax Department of West Bengal before deciding to pursue writing full time.
Across his career he wrote more than two hundred Bengali novels and became particularly well known for two major strands of work. One was a political quartet centered on the character Amritesh, which included the books Uttoradhikar, Kalbela and Kalpurush written between 1979 and 1989; Kalbela was later adapted into a Bengali film. The fourth book in that sequence, Mousholkal, was published in 2013. These novels engage with the rise of Naxalism and political upheaval in West Bengal during the 1960s and 1970s.
The second notable strand was a long-running detective series featuring a sleuth named Arjun. Majumdar created Arjun in 1983 with the publication of Khutimari Range, and over the following decades produced more than thirty books in the series, including titles such as Kalimpong e Sitaharan, Chandigarh e Gandogol, Arjun Samagra (1–6), and Arjun Ebang Chinese Cigarette.
Majumdar also wrote widely in other genres. His output included novels such as Jutay Rakter Daag, Din Jay Rat Jay, Agniratha, Buno Haansh (which was adapted into a 2014 Bengali film), Lokkhir Pachali, Showar, Haramir Hatbaksho, Ora Ebong Oder Maera, Buker Bhetor Bangladesh, Panchti Rahasya Upanyas, Bondinibash, Kosto Kosto Sukh and Saatkahon, the latter of which introduced a popular character named Dipaboli.
In addition to writing novels, Majumdar had an active interest in the theatre. He acted in college productions, wrote articles that were later adapted into plays, and worked as a director and scriptwriter for stage shows.
Public profile
Over the course of his life Majumdar received numerous honors. He was awarded the Ananda Purashkar by the ABP Group in 1982 and the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1984 for his novel Kalbela. He received the Bengal Film Journalists’ Association Award for Best Script Writer in 1982, the Bankim Puroshkar in 2009 for Kolikataye Nobokumar, and an honorary D.Litt. from North Bengal University in 2015. Later recognitions included the ABP Ananda Sera Bangali Award, the Banga Bibhushan Samman from the Government of West Bengal and a Best Bengali Award by ABP, all in 2018.
Majumdar was known by alternate spellings of his name and by the nickname Bablu. He wrote prolifically in Bengali and maintained a wide readership through both his standalone novels and series work.
