Sambit Patra was born on 13 December 1974 in Dhanbad, Jharkhand, and is identified with Odisha as his hometown. He completed his schooling at Chinmaya Vidyalaya in Bokaro and went on to study medicine at SCB Medical College, Cuttack, where he earned an MBBS and later an MS, completing his postgraduate training in 2002.

After finishing his surgical training, Patra began practising at SCB Medical College. He successfully cleared the UPSC Combined Medical Services Examination and took up a medical officer position at Hindurao Hospital in Delhi, combining clinical duties with an interest in social causes.

Career

Alongside his medical work, Patra founded an NGO called Swaraj in 2006 to focus on improving health and educational opportunities for marginalized communities, particularly Dalits and Adivasis in Odisha and Chhattisgarh.
