Early life and background

Sameer Rizvi was born on 6 December 2003 in Loiya, a village in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh. His family later moved to the Lal Kurti area of Meerut. Cricket entered his life through his maternal uncle, Tankeeb Akhtar, who played and coached locally; visiting stadiums to watch Tankeeb inspired Sameer and the uncle later became one of his first coaches.

Sameer attended JP Academy in Meerut and completed education up to the 10th standard. He grew up in a family where his father, Haseen Rizvi, worked as a property dealer and his mother, Ruksana Rizvi, is a homemaker. He has three elder siblings, including an elder brother Afseen Rizvi and an elder sister Naba Rizvi.

Career

Sameer’s recorded competitive journey began in 2014 with Uttar Pradesh’s Under-14 side. He progressed through the state age groups, representing Uttar Pradesh Under-16 and Under-19 before making his senior domestic debut for Uttar Pradesh in the 2019–20 season. He has also appeared for Uttar Pradesh’s Under-23 team.

In junior international exposure, Sameer represented India at Under-19 level across India Under-19 B, India Under-19 A and the India Under-19 team during 2018–20, featuring alongside contemporaries in the national youth set-up.

At the domestic and local level he has played club cricket for SG Cantt and Vats Sport, and participated in corporate tournaments. In one notable corporate-league performance he scored 126 off 48 balls.

The 2023 domestic season was also strong for Sameer at the Under-23 level. Named captain of Uttar Pradesh’s Under-23 side for the BCCI one-day tournament, he amassed 454 runs in seven matches and struck a match-winning 84 off 50 balls in the final to help his side win the Men’s Under-23 State A tournament. Across that competition he again led the tournament in sixes.

Those performances raised expectations ahead of the 2024 Indian Premier League auction. Sameer was acquired by Chennai Super Kings in the 2024 IPL auction. His preferred batting slot is in the middle order, typically between four and seven, where he has made a reputation as a powerful finisher.
