Sandeep Shrikant Kulkarni was born on 16 November 1964 in Pune, Maharashtra. He grew up in Pune and later pursued formal art training, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Sir J. J. School of Art in Mumbai. During his formative years as an artist he trained under noted Indian painters Prabhakar Kolte and Atul Dodia. His first public exhibition took place at the Jehangir Art Gallery in 1986, and his early commercial work included a commissioned painting of Sai Baba.

Alongside painting, Kulkarni became involved in theatre while still in college. He worked in Hindi, English and Marathi stage productions, and his college theatre group achieved recognition at the Indian National Theatre (INT) competition in the early 1980s. That sustained theatre experience helped him move into screen acting.

Career

Kulkarni’s screen debut came in the mid-1990s. His first film appearance was in Mammo (1994), and he made his television debut the following year with the series Swabhimaan on Doordarshan. From theatre and television he transitioned into a steady film career, working in both Marathi and Hindi-language projects.

He has appeared in more than 30 Hindi and Marathi movies. Among his notable Marathi films is Shwaas (2004), which was selected as India’s official entry for the Academy Awards. His performances have been recognized with several honors: three Maharashtra State awards for Best Actor for Shwaas (2004), Adhantari (2005) and Dombivali Fast (2006), and an international Best Actor award at the Nigerian International Film Festival for Ek Daav Sansaracha.
