Sandeep Patil Biography

Former Indian international cricketer Sandeep Madhusudan Patil made his mark as an aggressive right-handed batter and occasional medium-pace bowler. A key

Early life and background

Sandeep Madhusudan Patil was born on 8 August 1956 in Bombay (now Mumbai), in what was then Bombay State. He attended Balmohan Vidyamandir for school and went on to study at Ramnarain Ruia College in Mumbai. Cricket ran in the family: his father, Madhusudan Patil, played first-class cricket. Patil grew up in Mumbai and later maintained a residence in Jogeshwari.

Career

Patil emerged in domestic cricket with Bombay, making his Ranji Trophy debut in the 1975–76 season. He spent time representing several domestic sides during his career, including Mumbai (formerly Bombay), Madhya Pradesh, Central Zone, West Zone, Rest of India and various invitational XIs. Early on he played in university-level competition such as the Rohinton Baria Trophy and had stints playing league cricket in England, including spells with Edmonton in the Middlesex league and with Somerset A.

A right-handed batter known for an attacking approach, Patil also bowled right-arm medium pace. He broke into the Indian Test side at the turn of the 1980s, making his Test debut on 15 January 1980 against Pakistan at Chennai and his One-Day International debut on 6 December 1980 against Australia at the MCG. Over the course of his international career he played 29 Tests and 45 ODIs.

Patil produced several notable innings for India and in domestic cricket. In first-class cricket he recorded a double century for Bombay at Wankhede, an innings of 210 from 205 balls that featured multiple boundaries and sixes. In Tests he scored four centuries, with a highest Test score of 174 in Australia in January 1981 — an innings that stood out for rescuing India after early wickets. In the 1983 Cricket World Cup he was an important member of India’s title-winning squad, scoring 216 runs in eight matches and playing a fast, unbeaten 51 in the semi-final at Manchester. He contributed 26 in the final as India claimed their maiden World Cup.

Patil’s international statistics reflect his dual role with bat and ball. In Tests he accumulated 1,588 runs in 47 innings at an average just under 37, including four hundreds and seven fifties. With the ball in Tests he took nine wickets. In ODIs he scored 1,005 runs with nine fifties and took 15 wickets.

His international career had high points and interruptions. He was part of the 1980–81 tour of Australia that produced memorable, sometimes bruising contests; he retired hurt during one match after being struck by short-pitched bowling and then produced the 174 in Adelaide a short time later. He was in and out of the side over the early 1980s, with recalls and omissions across home and away series. Patil announced his retirement from international cricket in September 1986 after appearing in a match against Australia in Bombay. He continued in domestic cricket thereafter, including captaining Madhya Pradesh and producing a notable 185 against Bombay in 1990.

Post-playing career

After retiring as a player, Patil moved into coaching and administration. He coached the Kenyan national side and India A, and was credited with guiding Kenya to the semi-finals of the 2003 Cricket World Cup. Patil served as chairman of selectors for the Board of Control for Cricket in India from 27 September 2012 until September 2016.

Public profile

Beyond cricket, Patil appeared in a mainstream Hindi film, taking an acting role in Kabhi Ajnabi The, released in 1986. He also edited a Marathi sports magazine, Ekach Shatkar, which became a leading sports publication in Maharashtra. His family includes his wife Deepa Patil and sons Chirag Patil and Prateek Patil. Chirag later portrayed his father in the film 83, released in December 2021.

Personal details and playing style

Patil stood about 178 cm (5 ft 10 in) tall and weighed around 72 kg during his playing days. His eyes are dark brown and his hair is naturally black. He batted right-handed and bowled right-arm medium. His listed hobbies include cooking and painting. Among his preferred cricketers, he named Vivian Richards and Yuvraj Singh as batsmen he admired, and Richard Hadlee and Ian Botham as bowlers he liked.

As of the latest details in this profile, his son portrayed him in the 2021 film 83, and his tenure as India’s chief selector concluded in September 2016. Patil’s playing record and contributions as a coach and selector remain part of his public legacy.
