Early life and backgroundSandeep Singh Bhinder was born on 27 February 1986 in Shahabad, Haryana. Raised in a family with strong hockey connections, he followed the sporting footsteps of his elder brother, Bikramjeet Singh. From early childhood he gravitated toward hockey and trained regularly, often travelling to practice with his brother. He is a Sikh and is identified with the Jat community.
Career
Sandeep made his international debut in January 2004 at the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup in Kuala Lumpur. He quickly established himself as a specialist in penalty corners and earned a reputation as one of the world’s most feared drag-flickers. In 2005 he was the leading scorer at the Junior Hockey World Cup, and in 2008 he marked a strong comeback by finishing as the top scorer at the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup with eight goals.
His performances continued to attract attention: in 2009 he topped the scoring charts at the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup and was named Player of the Tournament. He was appointed captain of the Indian national team in January 2009 and led India to the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup title that year, the nation’s first in the event in 13 years. In qualifying for the 2012 London Olympics he scored 16 goals, the most in that qualifying tournament, and in the process broke a longstanding goal record previously held by Dhanraj Pillay.
Domestically and in franchise play, Sandeep has represented Mumbai Magicians (2013), Punjab Warriors (2014–2015), and Ranchi Rays (from 2016). He has also played club hockey for Havant Hockey Club in the United Kingdom. His elder brother Bikramjeet has also served as his coach and mentor.
Sandeep’s career has been shaped by a dramatic recovery from a severe accidental gunshot injury sustained in August 2006 aboard a train. The shot caused extensive internal injuries and left the lower part of his body temporarily paralyzed. After intensive treatment and rehabilitation, including a period abroad arranged with support from Hockey India, he returned to elite hockey and regained top form.

For his performances on the field, the International Hockey Federation named him among the world’s top five players in 2011, and the Government of India awarded him the Arjuna Award in 2010. The Haryana state government recognized his contributions by granting him an honorary DSP rank in the state police.

Sandeep has appeared on screen in a cameo role in the 2012 Punjabi film Ajj De Ranjhe. His life and career were later dramatized in the biographical feature film Soorma (originally titled Flicker Singh), released in 2018 with Diljit Dosanjh portraying his character and Taapsee Pannu and Angad Bedi in supporting roles.

He is known to be a non-vegetarian and has a tattoo of the Olympic rings on his right hand.
