Early life and background
Sandhya Devanathan was born in Andhra Pradesh, India, in 1976 and grew up in a middle-class family. She completed a B. Tech in Chemical Engineering at Andhra University, Visakhapatnam, and went on to earn an MBA from the Faculty of Management Studies at the University of Delhi. Later in her career she also completed a one-year leadership course at Saïd Business School, University of Oxford. During her college years she took part in technical festivals and public-speaking events such as elocution and debates.

Career
Devanathan began her professional life in 2000 at Citibank, joining the online and e-business team as a webmaster and product manager. Over the next several years she progressed through roles in product and portfolio management, moving into positions focused on personal loans and credit-card customer retention. Her Citi career included international assignments, including work in the Philippines and the United States, and a series of promotions that culminated in leadership of international consumer lending and sales-performance management roles.

In 2009 she left Citi and joined Standard Chartered Bank in Singapore. There she led cross-selling and pricing globally before being named managing director and head of credit cards and unsecured loans. She later served as managing director of retail banking and payment products, a role she held for roughly a year before departing the bank in 2015.

Devanathan joined Facebook (now Meta) in 2016 as a group director. Within months she took on leadership responsibilities in Asia, serving as country managing director for Singapore and business head for Vietnam. She expanded her remit at Meta over the following years, including serving as vice president of Asia Pacific Gaming in 2020.

On 17 November 2022 Meta announced Devanathan’s appointment as vice president and head of Meta India. The appointment was effective from 1 January 2023. Meta’s corporate leadership highlighted her experience scaling businesses, building teams and driving product innovation as reasons for her selection.

Throughout her career Devanathan has been recognized with industry awards, including earlier honors from Citibank and recognitions such as an Asia Pacific award from The Asian Banker and inclusion on the Singapore Women in Tech 100 list in 2021.
