Sanil Shetty Biography
Sanil Shankar Shetty is an Indian left‑handed table tennis player from Mumbai who has represented India at major international events and won multiple team
Early life and backgroundSanil Shankar Shetty was born on 16 August 1989 in Mumbai, Maharashtra. He grew up in a sporting household: his father Shankar Shetty played table tennis while his elder brother Sachin competed at the national level and later became a coach. Sanil says his interest in the sport began at age nine when Sachin gave him a racket, and his brother remained a key influence as he pursued a playing career.
Sanil’s early childhood included health challenges. He was born prematurely and required medical treatment for several years because of a congenital heart issue. Those early medical concerns initially made his parents cautious about him taking part in physical activity, and they encouraged artistic pursuits until medical care and family support allowed him to train in table tennis.
Career
Sanil Shetty trained for many years under Deepak Mani at the YMCA in Andheri, Mumbai. He later moved to Frankfurt, Germany, to continue his development with German coach Peter Engel. His coaching team has also included Kamlesh Mehta.
He has represented Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) in national competitions after taking up employment with the organisation in 2011. Over the course of his career Shetty has competed widely for India and earned medals at continental and multi-sport championships.
Shetty’s medal record spans more than a decade. Early international success includes a bronze at the 2012 Fajr Cup in Iran and a gold at the 2010 US Open U‑21 event. In 2014 he won the Senior National and Inter‑State Table Tennis Championship, becoming only the second player from Mumbai to capture that title since 1995. He added a silver at the 2014 Fajr Cup and helped India to gold in the men’s team event at the 2015 Asian Table Tennis Championship in Thailand.
The 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast were a turning point: he was part of the Indian squad that won the men’s team gold and also took bronze in mixed doubles. That year he also finished as a silver medallist at the ITTF Thailand Open and, alongside his wife, earned a silver in mixed doubles at the All India Inter‑Institutional Championships.
In subsequent years Shetty continued to collect podium results, including multiple medals at the South Asian Games and a bronze in the men’s team event at the 2021 Asian Championships in Doha. He won the National Ranking Table Tennis Championship in Dehradun in 2021. In 2022 he was again part of India’s men’s team that secured gold at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
Playing style and rankings
Sanil plays left‑handed. As of July 2022 his international ranking was listed as 222 while he was ranked second nationally in India that year. His listed height and weight are 1.69 m (5'5") and approximately 65 kg (143 lbs). His eye colour is dark brown and his hair is black.
Public profile
Sanil is married to fellow table tennis player Reeth Rishya; the couple married on 23 December 2018 and have competed together in mixed doubles events. His family includes his parents, Shankar and Bharathi Shetty, his elder brother Sachin and two sisters, Priya and Sneha. He has been recognised domestically for his achievements, receiving the BPCL Award in 2013 and being felicitated by the Table Tennis Federation of India following Commonwealth Games success.
Off the table he has cited sportspersons such as M.S. Dhoni, Timo Boll and Jun Mizutani among those he admires. Favourite foods and cultural tastes noted in public profiles include butter chicken and an interest in Punjabi and Italian cuisine. He has referenced the importance of perseverance and hard work in interviews about his career.
