Sanjay Goradia Biography

Sanjay Goradia is an Indian theatre practitioner, actor, director and producer known for a long career in Gujarati theatre and roles in Hindi and Gujaratis

Early life and background

Sanjay Goradia was born on 17 September 1959 in Delvada, Gujarat, and grew up after his family moved to Mumbai. He attended Lilavati Lalji Dayal High School in Mumbai and completed a college degree. His mother, Jyotsna Goradia, worked in theatre and his family ran an ayurveda shop that helped support them through difficult times.

Goradia experienced financial hardship in childhood and took on work at a medical store to help the household. He became involved in theatre in 1979, beginning with backstage work on the play Pagla Ghoda at Elphinstone College. Those early years shaped his approach to work in theatre: practical, hands-on and focused on building a sustainable craft and career.

Career

Goradia’s career spans acting, directing and producing, with a foundation in Gujarati theatre and later work in Hindi television and film. He worked his way up from backstage roles to production manager and producer, eventually producing and acting in more than a hundred Gujarati plays. He has written at least two Gujarati plays and directed multiple stage productions.

His entry into acting on stage came relatively later in life; he began performing around age 45 with the play Chagan Magan Tara Chhapre Lagan. He went on to perform in numerous Gujarati stage productions, including Kanch Na Sambandh, Karo Kanku Na, Ekko Raja Rani, Shukan Sava Rupiyo, Pappu Pass Thai Gayo and Aa Family Fantastic Chhe. He has also directed and produced many Gujarati plays and oversaw Hindi stage productions such as Maa Retire Hoti Hai and Pati, Patni Aur Mein.

Goradia expanded into television production for Gujarati audiences, producing shows including Azunahi Chaand Raat Ahe, Tari Ankh No Afini, Aa Family Comedy Che, Kumkum Na Pagla Padya and Sukh Mare Angane for Colors Gujarati. As an actor he appeared on Hindi television in series such as Naya Nukkad, Kabhi Yeh Kabhi Woh, Teri Bi Chup Meri Bi Chup, Hum Paanch, Thodi Khushi Thode Gham and Filmi Chakker.

On the big screen, Goradia appeared in several Hindi films including Khal Nayak, Is Raat Ki Subah Nahin, Safari, Kahin Pyaar Na Ho Jaaye and Chhichhore. In recent years he has been seen in Gujarati films such as Baap No Bagicho, Kehvatlal Parivar and Vaahlam Jaao Ne, all released in 2022.

Goradia also embraced new distribution methods for theatre: he was among the producers who recorded stage productions onto DVD and sold rights, and he has said that a number of his plays are available on OTT platforms.

Public profile

Goradia’s personal life has been marked by responsibility and family obligations. He married Chanda Goradia on 7 February 1991; the couple have a son, Amatya Goradia. His older siblings predeceased him. Over the years he has balanced stage work with television and film, and he has collaborated with well-known actors from both Gujarati and Hindi cinema.

Recognition for Goradia’s work includes the Gujarat Pride Ratna Award presented in 2022 by the Speaker of the Gujarat Legislative Assembly and the Girnar Award from the Bruhad Mumbai Gujarati Samaj in 2023.

Latest updates

In the 2010s and 2020s Goradia continued to work across mediums.
