Sanjay Jha (Politician) Biography

Sanjay Jha is an Indian writer, entrepreneur, keynote speaker and former national spokesperson of the Indian National Congress. With an academic background

Early life and background
Sanjay Jha was born in Gangtok, Sikkim, and grew up with a strong academic focus. He attended Bishop’s School in Pune for his school education and went on to study economics at Fergusson College, Pune, where he graduated with distinction. He continued his higher studies at the University of Pune, earning a master’s degree in economics, and later obtained a PhD in economics from the University of Patna. Jha also completed an MBA in Human Resources at XLRI, Jamshedpur.

Career
Jha began his professional life in the corporate sector, starting as a sales executive with Bharat Petroleum. Over time he moved into senior roles in the financial services and investment management industries, including positions as vice president at Alliance Capital (Mumbai) and senior vice president at ITC-Threadneedle (Mumbai).

In 2000 he launched CricketNext.com, a web portal covering cricket news and live match coverage; the site was sold to Network18 in 2012. Jha has also worked with Dale Carnegie Training in India and is identified with roles as an entrepreneur, keynote speaker and writer.

Politics
Sanjay Jha entered active politics by joining the Indian National Congress (INC) in 2012. In 2013 he was appointed the party’s national spokesperson and represented the INC on English-language television debates and panels. He served in that spokesperson role until June 2020. Jha also served as president of the All India Professionals’ Congress (Mumbai) from 2017 until he resigned from that post in July 2020.

Following the 2014 and 2019 general election defeats for the INC, Jha became a vocal critic of aspects of the party’s internal culture and leadership, calling for greater internal democracy and reforms. In June 2020 he was removed from the national spokesperson post, and in mid-July 2020 his primary membership of the Congress party was terminated for what the party described as “anti-party activities” and a breach of discipline.

Writing and public work
A sports enthusiast with a particular interest in cricket, Jha authored a book that chronicles significant events in Indian cricket between 2003 and 2010. He has also co-authored a motivational book with a collaborator from Harvard Medical School; that title went on to appear on a national bestseller list following its 2013 publication.

Personal life
Sanjay Jha is married to Pallavi Jha and lives in Mumbai, Maharashtra. The couple have two daughters, Maithili and Mohini. His father, Diwakar Jha, worked in academia as a professor. Jha maintains an active lifestyle and continues to play tennis at club level. He is also a dog owner who shares images of his pet on social media.

Public profile
Known for his forthright commentary, Jha has occasionally been involved in public controversies related to social media posts, for which he has issued apologies when required. He has been associated with the ideological legacy of Gandhi and Nehru and has spoken publicly about the need for the INC to return to certain founding principles.

Latest updates
In mid-2020 Sanjay Jha’s formal association with the Indian National Congress ended when he was removed from his spokesperson role in June and his primary party membership was revoked in July. At around the same period he stepped down from his role leading the Mumbai unit of the All India Professionals’ Congress.
