Early life and background
Sanjay Jog was born on 24 September 1955 in Nagpur, Maharashtra. He grew up in a Marathi-speaking, middle-class family and spent much of his childhood between Pune and Nagpur. After completing his schooling in Nagpur he moved to Bombay (now Mumbai) for higher studies and earned a B.Sc. from Elphinstone College. He later took an acting course at Filmalaya Studio in Mumbai as he prepared to pursue a career in performance.

Career
Jog made his screen debut in Marathi cinema with the film Sapla (1976). That first film failed at the box office and led him to return to his hometown for a time, but he came back to Mumbai and found better fortune soon after. He appeared in the multi-starrer Marathi film Jidd, which performed well and helped establish him as a capable actor in regional cinema.

Over the following years he worked extensively in Marathi films, with credits that include Gondhalat Gondhal, Maay Baap, Khara Kadhi Sangu Naye, Dista Tasa Nasta, Navri Mile Navryala and Sage Soyre. He also appeared in Gujarati productions, notably Dikri Chali Sasariye (1985), in which he played an anti-hero and which did well commercially.

Jog crossed over to Hindi cinema later in his career. His Hindi debut came with Apna Ghar (1989), and he went on to act in Jigarwala (1991), Humshakal (1992), Naseebwala (1992) and Beta Ho To Aisa (1994), which was his last released film.

The television role that brought him the widest recognition was Bharat in Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayan (1987). His performance as Lord Rama’s brother resonated strongly with audiences and made him a household name. Jog has said that a makeup artist he worked with on another project recommended him to the Ramayan team, and that meeting led to his casting. He has also noted that he chose the role of Bharat over Lakshman because he valued the sensitive, duty-driven scenes Bharat is known for.

Public profile
Across his career Jog appeared in roughly thirty Marathi films and gave several commercially successful performances, including work that contributed to multiple jubilee milestones at the box office. He maintained a grounded public image and spoke about continuing ordinary habits despite his stardom. He described himself as devout and superstitious, and he was conversant in several languages beyond Marathi, including Hindi, English, Punjabi and Gujarati.

Outside of acting he had an interest in farming. He owned land and a poultry farm in Pune and spoke of tending those interests alongside his film work.

Personal life
Jog was married to Neeta, who worked as a lawyer. The couple had two children: a son, Ranjit Jog, who also pursued acting, and a daughter, Natasha. At the time of his death he was 40 years old.

Death
Sanjay Jog died on 27 November 1995 in Mumbai. The cause of death was reported as liver failure.
