Sanjay Kapoor was born on 17 October 1960 in Chembur, a suburb of Mumbai, Maharashtra. He grew up in Mumbai and is the son of film producer Surinder Kapoor. His mother was Nirmal Kapoor. Sanjay’s upbringing was closely connected to the Hindi film world through his family; his siblings include producers and actors, and he maintained childhood friendships with members of other film families.

He completed his schooling up to the 10th standard. At one point he hoped to pursue studies abroad, but family circumstances and the performance of a film prevented that plan.

Career

Kapoor began his career in Hindi cinema as a leading man. His debut as a film actor came with Prem, a movie that had been in production for several years before its 1995 release. Following that he appeared in Raja (1995) opposite Madhuri Dixit, a film that fared well at the box office. Through the late 1990s he continued to take leading roles in commercial films such as Auzaar (1997), Mohabbat (1997) and Sirf Tum (1999).

While several of his films did not establish him as a consistent box-office lead, he received acclaim for specific performances. Notably, his portrayal of a disturbed husband in the 2002 film Koi Mere Dil Se Poochhe earned praise.

Beyond acting in films, Kapoor moved into production with the film Kya Time Hai Yaar in 2009. He has also worked on television: he appeared in Karishma – The Miracles of Destiny (2003–04) and was later cast by filmmaker Vikram Bhatt for the television project Ishq Gunaah opposite Smriti Kalra.

In later years he continued to appear on screen in character and cameo roles. He made a cameo appearance in the 2017 film Mubarakan, which was the first time he shared a film credit with his brother Anil Kapoor.
