Sanjay Pandey was born on 12 March 1972 in Kamhariya Village, Azamgarh, Uttar Pradesh, and grew up in a middle-class family. He completed his schooling in Katni, Madhya Pradesh, and went on to earn a Master of Arts degree in Sanskrit. While still a teenager, he formed a theatre group called Sampreshan in Katni in 1987, reflecting an early commitment to performance that guided his later career.

After completing his MA, Pandey spent two years training in acting at Rang Vidushak Drama Theatre in Bhopal. He later moved to Mumbai to pursue professional opportunities in acting and supported himself by taking on various odd jobs while seeking screen roles.
