Sanjay Pugalia grew up in a joint family of businessmen in Sahibganj, which was then part of Bihar and is now in Jharkhand. He earned a graduate degree in Political Science and History. Pugalia moved to Mumbai in 1982 and began his professional life in newspapers, joining Navbharat Times. He spent a decade at that paper before relocating to Delhi and working for Business Standard for about three years. He later transitioned into television news, taking a role as Deputy Executive Producer at Aaj Tak.
