Early life and background

Sanjay Kumar Singh, popularly called Bablu, hails from Kashi (Varanasi) in Uttar Pradesh and comes from a family of farmers. His father is Nand Lal Singh and his mother is Gyanati Devi. Growing up in a wrestling-supporting environment, his family organised an annual mud-wrestling event (mitti ki kushti) each Maha Shivaratri, a tradition that helped root him in the sport’s local culture.

Career

Singh’s administrative career in wrestling spans more than a decade. He served as district president of the Varanasi Wrestling Association beginning in 2008 and was elected vice president of the Uttar Pradesh Wrestling Association in 2009. He later joined the Wrestling Federation of India’s executive council and in 2019 was appointed joint secretary of the WFI executive committee.

On 21 December 2023, Singh won the WFI presidential election, defeating former gold medallist Anita Sheoran by a vote of 40–7. Following the victory he described the result as the outcome of long-standing work for wrestlers and framed the election win as a restoration of competitive opportunities that had been constrained in the preceding months.

Singh is also identified as an affiliate of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). He has been credited in reporting with working to improve the social standing of female wrestlers from Purvanchal, Uttar Pradesh.

Singh maintains close political and professional ties with Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, the former WFI president and a Member of Parliament. He has described their relationship in familial terms, likening it to that of an elder and younger brother and tracing it back to their families’ involvement in organising kushti in Kashi and Ayodhya.

The December 2023 WFI election that brought Singh to the presidency drew public scrutiny and opposition from several prominent Indian wrestlers. Wrestlers including Sakshi Malik, Bajrang Punia and Vinesh Phogat voiced strong objections to his election, citing their concerns about associations between Singh and Brij Bhushan. In response to the protests, Singh said the federation would welcome any athlete who chose to compete and that the organisation harbors no ill will toward wrestlers.

Soon after the new executive committee announced plans for U-15 and U-20 national trials, the Sports Ministry intervened. On 24 December 2023 the ministry suspended the Wrestling Federation of India, stating that the new body had not followed required constitutional procedures and had not given wrestlers sufficient notice for trials. The suspension remained in place pending further orders and compliance with due process.
