Early life and background

Sanjeeta Bhattacharya was born on 20 May 1995 and raised in New Delhi. Her family has roots in Kolkata, West Bengal. She grew up in a household with a strong artistic influence: her father, Sanjay Bhattacharya, is a modern and contemporary painter and photographer, while members of her family are involved in music and the visual arts. She attended Mount Carmel School, Anand Niketan, and Delhi Public School Vasant Kunj during her school years.

From a young age Sanjeeta pursued formal training in the arts. She began piano lessons at about five years old and later trained in Kathak under Pandit Birju Maharaj. As a child she participated in her school music band and, while still in school, took part in state and national level competitions.

Career

Sanjeeta built a multifaceted career that blends performing, composing and acting. She studied at Berklee College of Music in the United States and while at Berklee performed with the Berklee Indian Ensemble, sharing a stage with A. R. Rahman at Boston Symphony Hall in 2015. During this period she also formed a band called Voicestra with fellow musicians including Vikramaditya Negi, Aditi Malhotra and Kaushik Manikandan.

Her musical output spans multiple languages and styles — including jazz, R&B, pop, choir music and Indian classical — and she is comfortable singing in English, Hindi, Spanish, French and Portuguese. She is versed in Balkan and flamenco traditions and is trained on instruments such as violin and guitar. Sanjeeta launched a self-titled YouTube channel in 2010 where she has released her songs and original material.

Sanjeeta has released recorded work and lent her voice to a variety of tracks over the years, including songs listed as "I Will Wait" (2017), "Shams" (2019), "Khoya Sa" (2021), "Uddchalein" (2022) and "Out of Tune" (2022). Her music album Shuruaat was released in 2022 and received a nomination in 2023 for Best Global Music Album at the Grammy Awards.

On the acting front, she made her web-series debut in 2021 on Netflix with the anthology Feels Like Ishq, playing the character Muskaan. She also appeared in the ZEE5 series The Broken News (2022) and made her Bollywood film debut in 2023 with Jawan, in which she played a character named Helena.
