Early life and backgroundSanjeev Rajput was born on 5 January 1981 in Yamuna Nagar, Haryana. Raised in a modest household—his father, Krishan Lal, worked as a street food vendor—Rajput left formal schooling to join the Indian Navy in 1999. He attended SD Public School in Jagadhri during his school years and later pursued higher education through institutions including Calorx Teachers University (Sabarmati University) and Indira Gandhi Technological and Medical Sciences University. Over time he completed a BA in Humanities and an MA in Physical Education Teaching and Coaching.
Rajput has said his early naval experiences sparked his interest in shooting. Serving aboard ships, where makeshift targets were used during downtime, introduced him to the discipline and conditions that later shaped his sporting career.
Career
Rajput joined the Indian Navy as a sailor and rose to the rank of Junior Commissioned Officer before retiring after about 14 years of service. While with the navy he moved into competitive shooting and trained under coaches including Felix Thomas, Oleg from Ukraine, and national coach Randhir Singh.
Specializing in 10 m and 50 m rifle events, Rajput has represented India across multiple international competitions. His event roster includes AR60, FR3X40, FR60PR and mixed team formats. He set a national benchmark at the ISSF World Cup in 2007 with a score of 1170/1200, breaking that mark in 2011 with 1181 points.
His medal record spans the Commonwealth Championships, ISSF World Cup circuit, Commonwealth Games and Asian Games. Highlights include gold medals in the 50 m rifle 3 positions at the 2010 Commonwealth Championships in Delhi and an ISSF World Cup gold in the 50 m rifle 3 positions at Changwon in 2011. At the Commonwealth Games he won gold in the 50 m rifle 3 positions in 2018 and earlier podium finishes dating back to 2006.
Rajput earned silver medals at World Cup events in Sydney (2010) and Baku (2016), and additional silver and bronze medals at continental and Commonwealth competitions through the 2010s. His performances earned him the Arjuna Award in 2010, recognizing his contributions to Indian shooting.
He has also served as a coach: in February 2015 he was appointed a shooting coach by the Sports Authority of India. Coaching offered him a way to refine his own technique, and he later returned to high-level competition, including a silver at the 2018 Asian Games and participation in the Tokyo Olympics (held in 2021).
Public profile
Rajput is unmarried and describes himself as coming from a financially constrained background, which shaped his early choices to seek steady employment. He credited his pensions from the navy and support from the Target Olympic Podium Scheme for enabling his training. Outside of shooting he practices yoga regularly, enjoys adventurous activities and reading, and is a dog lover—his pet dog is named Tokyo. He has said he follows spiritual teacher Sri Sri Ravi Shankar.
Physical and technical profile
Listed at 1.78 m (5'10") and about 78 kg, Rajput is right-handed and right-eye dominant. His stated body measurements and appearance details include black hair and black eyes. He has competed across prone, three-position and air rifle formats and is known for his steady temperament.
Controversy
In 2016 Rajput faced an allegation of sexual assault by a female co-shooter that led to an FIR in Pune and to his suspension from his coaching role at the Sports Authority of India. Rajput denied the accusations. He later spoke about focusing on rebuilding his career and preparing for competition despite the setback.
Latest updates
Rajput continued to compete internationally through the late 2010s and into the Tokyo Olympic cycle. He represented India at the Tokyo Olympics 2020 (held in 2021) and remained active on social media, including an Instagram account where he shares training and personal updates. He has expressed plans to stay involved in the sport after competitive retirement, including coaching and possibly establishing a private shooting range.
