Santanu Hazarika Biography
Santanu Hazarika is an Indian multidisciplinary visual artist from Guwahati known for winning the 2014 Red Bull World Doodle Art Championship. A self-told,
Early life and backgroundSantanu Kaushik Hazarika was born on 1 April 1991 in Guwahati, Assam. Raised in a middle-class Hindu Assamese family, he showed an early interest in sketching and comics that steered him toward visual art. His parents had hoped he would pursue engineering; Santanu enrolled at the Royal School of Engineering and Technology but struggled with the course and left during his final year. He later completed formal art education with a bachelor’s degree in graphic design from LISAA School of Art & Design.
Career
Santanu began working as a graphic designer while still in college, taking on local projects from around 2012. A pivotal moment came in 2014 when he entered and won the Red Bull World Doodle Art Championship. The victory led to a collaboration with Red Bull’s consumer products team and contributed to his decision to leave engineering and pursue a career in visual arts and design.
In March 2014 he founded Dilate Ink, a brand focused on original character design and apparel. From 2014 to 2017 Santanu worked with Red Bull as a graphic designer. He has held roles and collaborations across institutions and companies: he worked as a visual artist at IIT Guwahati (August 2015–September 2016), spoke at Dibrugarh University in April–May 2016, and joined Mojarto, an NDTV-owned art marketplace, in November 2016. He also contributed as an artist for the Ministry of Culture in New Delhi for a short project in late 2016, and collaborated with Zoomcar in Kolkata in 2017.
Santanu’s practice spans multiple genres and media. He creates graphic novels, urban art, sci-fi and fantasy work, and pieces influenced by anime, video games, dark comedy and metal-inspired themes. His work appears on traditional and unconventional canvases alike, including murals, cars and sneakers. He has run doodling workshops with brands such as Adidas, advocating doodling as both a creative practice and a career option.
Public profile
Santanu’s public recognition grew after the Red Bull competition; his winning doodle of a Hinduism-themed composition on a Taj Mahal canvas brought him national attention and a T-shirt design that was sold through Red Bull’s platform. He later collaborated with musicians and digital platforms: in 2021 he worked with singer-producer Ritviz to produce an NFT titled Sanviz, which was offered on the WazirX marketplace and sold rapidly.
In January 2022 Santanu presented his first solo exhibition, titled BLCK, at Gallery Art & Soul in Mumbai. The show focused on monochromatic work created with dense black ink, reflecting his long-standing interest in strong graphic forms and doodling techniques. He has also been selected to contribute as one of the artists featured in the FIFA 2022 World Cup anthem project and has served as a judge at events including the Red Bull World Doodle Art Championship (2023) and the Royal Enfield Art of Motorcycling competition (Season 3).
Personal life
Santanu is unmarried. His parents are Ramen Hazarika, a businessman, and Mili Hazarika, a homemaker; he has a brother, Partha Hazarika, who is a musician. Santanu has several tattoos, including ink on both arms and a Deadpool tattoo on his right leg. He lives with two pet dogs and has spoken publicly about how personal relationships influence and inspire his creative process.
