Early life and background

Sanya Malhotra was born on 25 February 1992 in Delhi, India. Raised in a Punjabi family, she attended Ryan International School in Mayur Vihar and later graduated from Gargi College at the University of Delhi. As a child she was drawn to performing arts, participating in school theatre and developing a strong interest in dance; she trained in ballet and credits early stage experience for shaping her screen ambitions.

Career

After finishing college, Malhotra moved to Mumbai in 2013 to pursue performance opportunities. She took part in a televised dance competition that year but did not advance beyond the initial rounds. Remaining in the city, she began working in advertisements and exploring acting roles.

Her breakout came with the 2016 film Dangal, in which she played Babita Kumari. Cast from a large audition pool, she won the role and attracted notice for her portrayal of the wrestler who later won a Commonwealth Games gold medal. During the shoot she lived alongside her co-actors for several months while the production filmed under Aamir Khan’s supervision.

Following Dangal, Malhotra gained practical experience behind the camera by interning at Aamir Khan Productions. There she learned elements of pre-production, post-production, background scoring and visual effects. She also contributed as a choreographer for the production Secret Superstar (2017).
