Sapthami Gowda Biography

Sapthami Gowda is an Indian actress and trained civil engineer from Bengaluru who came to wider attention for her role in the Kannada film Kantara (2022).A

Early life and background

Sapthami Gowda was born on 8 June 1996 in Bangalore (now Bengaluru). Raised in the city she calls home, she completed her schooling at Baldwin Girls' High School and later attended Sri Kumaran Children’s Home Composite Junior College. Sapthami pursued higher education at the Bangalore Institute of Technology and holds a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Civil Engineering.

Alongside academics, she trained as a swimmer from an early age and competed at state and national levels. Her swimming achievements include a gold medal at an Indian Triathlon Federation event in Indore in 2010. Her family includes her father, Umesh Sk Doddi, who served as a police officer; her mother, Shantha Madaiah; and a sister, Uthare Gowda, who is also a swimmer.

Career

Sapthami began her professional life outside the film industry, working as an associate software engineer at Accenture in Bengaluru. She transitioned into acting with a screen debut in 2019, appearing in the Kannada film Popcorn Monkey Tiger as the character Girija. Her performance in that film earned her recognition as a promising new talent.

In 2022 Sapthami appeared in Rishab Shetty’s Kantara, portraying the role of Leela. Kantara emerged as one of the highest-grossing Kannada films of that year, and Sapthami has spoken about how the film’s success felt overwhelming and rewarding, given how early it arrived in her acting career.

Her early work and reception brought industry attention and awards. She won the South Indian International Movie Award for Best Debutant Actor for Popcorn Monkey Tiger, and in September 2023 she received the SIIMA Critics Award for Best Actress (Kannada) for her work in Kantara.

Sapthami has been selective about roles and has discussed turning down parts she felt would typecast her. She declined an offer for the film Hey Ram because the part resembled the type of character she had already played; discussions with that production team reportedly left the door open for future collaboration on a project that would offer a stronger, different role.

Public profile

Sapthami is unmarried and identifies as Indian by nationality. She lists hobbies such as swimming, travelling and reading novels. Physically, she is approximately 172 cm tall (about 5 feet 8 inches) with black hair and black eyes. She has a tattoo of three triangles on her right arm, each triangle symbolizing a personal meaning: learn, explore and create.

She has named actresses Radhika Pandit, Nithya Menen and Samantha Akkineni among her favourites. Professionally she balances identities as an actress, a civil engineer by training and an accomplished swimmer.

Latest updates

Recent recognition for Sapthami’s performances includes the SIIMA Critics Award for Best Actress (Kannada) in 2023 for Kantara. Her filmography to date includes Popcorn Monkey Tiger (2019) and Kantara (2022). She has indicated a preference for roles that offer substance and variety and has expressed interest in projects with stronger female characters, including one discussed with a team that would feature a cop as a central role.

Sapthami remains based in Bengaluru and continues to be associated with cinema while drawing on her background in engineering and competitive swimming.
