Early life and background

Sarabjot Singh was born on 30 September 2001 in Dheen village, Ambala block, Haryana. Raised in a farming family, his father is Jitender Singh. He attended Bhagirath Public School in Ambala and later studied at DAV College, Chandigarh. Sarabjot’s hometown is Ambala and he holds Indian nationality.

As a child he initially wanted to play football, but an encounter at a summer camp in which children practised shooting on paper targets changed his path. That experience inspired him to pursue shooting despite his family’s initial concerns about the costs involved. He persuaded his parents to support his choice and began formal training.

Career

Sarabjot is an air pistol specialist who trains under coach Abhishek Rana, who has been guiding him since 2016. He made his mark early on at district level with a silver medal, then progressed rapidly through junior national and international competitions.

He has a strong record in 10m air pistol events across junior and senior competitions. Highlights include double gold in team events at the 65th National Shooting Championships held at the MP Shooting Academy in Bhopal in December 2022, and multiple podium finishes at ISSF junior events in Suhl and at the Asian Championships in Doha in 2019.

Sarabjot was part of the Indian junior team that won world championship gold in Lima in 2021 in both the team and mixed-team air pistol events. He continued that form into 2023, producing top scores at the World Cup stage in Bhopal where he won the 10m air pistol men’s final, finishing as the top qualifier and recording key match scores that underscored his consistency. At that Bhopal World Cup he posted 585 in qualification and recorded a 253.2 in a final to secure the title.

In team competition at the August 2023 finals, Sarabjot combined with teammates Shiva Narwal and Arjun Singh Cheema to post an aggregate of 1,734 in the final; his individual qualification score at that event was 578. He has also collected medals at ISSF Junior Cup stages and the Asian Championships, including team and mixed-team golds in junior categories.

At the 2024 Paris Olympics, Sarabjot earned a bronze medal in the 10m air pistol mixed team event alongside Manu Bhaker.
