Early life and background

Saran Shakthi was born on 5 May 1997 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. He grew up in the city that is also his hometown and holds Indian nationality. From an early age he was drawn to performance work; his family supported his ambitions, with his father particularly encouraging his acting pursuits.

Career

Saran’s screen career began on television in 2012 when he appeared in the Tamil daily soap Amudha Oru Aacharyakuri, a production associated with the well-known director K. Balachander. The exposure on television led to film opportunities, and in 2013 he made his cinematic debut in Mani Ratnam’s Kadal, portraying the character Young Thomas.

Through 2014 he continued to work as a child artiste, appearing in several Tamil films including Jilla, Rummy and Sigaram Thodu. He also took the young version of a lead character in the comedy-thriller Vai Raja Vai. As he matured, Saran secured roles with established filmmakers and actors, and in 2018 he appeared in the gangster drama Vada Chennai, playing the younger brother of the character played by Aishwarya Rajesh and sharing screen space with Dhanush.

Saran’s first lead role arrived in 2019 with the film Sagaa, in which he played the central character Sathya. While the film did not make a large box-office impact, one of its songs connected with audiences and gained popularity among his supporters. He continued to take a variety of roles, including a negative part in Etharkkum Thunindhavan (2020) where he portrayed a henchman, and a supporting part in the 2021 film Netrikann as a delivery boy who assists a blind woman investigating a crime.

Expansion beyond Tamil cinema came in 2022 when director Prashanth Neel cast Saran in KGF: Chapter 2, a high-profile Kannada-language production. The director had considered actors from several industries before selecting Saran, who was contacted shortly before filming. The role marked a notable step into a wider South Indian film market.
