Saraya Bevis (Paige) Biography

British professional wrestler, actress and entrepreneur Saraya Jade Bevis rose from the UK independent scene to international prominence in WWE as Paige. A

Early life and background

Saraya Jade Bevis was born on 17 August 1992 in Norwich, Norfolk, England. Raised in a family of wrestlers, she trained alongside her brother from a young age under the guidance of her father. Though she once considered a different path as a child, her family’s wrestling background and early exposure to the business set the course for her career.

As a teenager Saraya worked at her parents’ pub, taking on roles such as bouncer and bartender, while continuing to develop as a performer. She completed her schooling in Norwich and later travelled to the United States in her early twenties to pursue opportunities in American wrestling promotions.

Career

Saraya began competing on the independent circuit as a teenager. Her first recorded match occurred in April 2006 when she teamed with her mother under the name Britani Knight. Over the next several years she worked for numerous European promotions, including the World Association of Women’s Wrestling (WAWW), Real Quality Wrestling (RQW), Herts and Essex Wrestling (HEW), Pro-Wrestling: EVE, German Stampede Wrestling (GSW), Swiss Championship Wrestling (SCW) and Turkish Power Wrestling (TPW). During this period she collected multiple regional titles and featured in both singles and tag team programs, frequently competing against and alongside members of her family.

Her independent career also included appearances in the American Shimmer Women Athletes promotion, where she competed under the Britani Knight name and formed a storyline partnership and rivalry that played out across several tapings.

After attending WWE tryouts twice, Saraya signed with WWE in September 2011 and was assigned to Florida Championship Wrestling (FCW). She debuted at a house show in January 2012 and made her televised FCW debut the following month. The ring name Paige was later adopted in WWE, inspired by a television character.

Paige rose quickly through WWE’s developmental system and emerged as a breakout star in NXT. She became the inaugural NXT Women’s Champion by defeating Emma on 24 July 2013. Her success in NXT led to a rapid transition to WWE’s main roster, where she captured the Divas Championship. At age 21 she set records in WWE’s women’s division, becoming the youngest Divas Champion, the first woman to win that title in her debut match, and the only woman to hold both the Divas and NXT Women’s Championships simultaneously in 2014. Her 301-day NXT title reign ended when the NXT Championship was vacated after she had already secured the Divas title.

Throughout her career Saraya has been known for signature moves such as the Paige Turner and the Scorpion Cross-Lock, and for performing in a range of promotions that also include All Elite Wrestling (AEW) later in her career.

Public profile

Saraya has been recognized within the wrestling industry with several honors. Pro Wrestling Illustrated ranked her No. 1 in its Female 50 list for 2014 and No. 2 in 2015. Rolling Stone named her Diva of the Year in 2014, and WWE included her among The 50 Greatest Women Superstars, placing her at No. 17 on the list published in 2021. WWE also presented her with a Year-End Award as General Manager of the Year in 2018. Her career has involved high-profile storylines and matches that contributed to her standing as one of the most prominent female performers of her era.

Her public life has included disciplinary episodes related to WWE’s Wellness Policy in 2016 that resulted in suspensions; she returned to WWE programming in September 2017. In March 2017 she was the victim of a widely reported privacy breach when personal images and videos were posted online without her consent, an incident she has said had serious emotional consequences.

Personal life

Saraya’s parents are both professional wrestlers: her father Patrick Bevis, also known as Ricky Knight, and her mother Julia Hamer-Bevis, known in the ring as Sweet Saraya (Saraya Knight). She has two older brothers who are also wrestlers. She is British by nationality and was raised in Norwich. Her listed physical stats include a height of 5 feet 8 inches (1.73 m) and an approximate competition weight of 55 kg.

Latest updates

As of 2023 Saraya is 31 years old and continues to be identified in public records as a wrestler, actress and entrepreneur. Her career remains notable for its rapid ascent from the UK independent circuit to major championship success in WWE and recognition on industry year-end lists.
