His father, Gurnam Singh, worked as an RMP doctor and his mother is Jasveer Kaur. An elder brother, Didar Singh, also played hockey at the national level and influenced Sardar’s early interest in the sport.

Sardar’s upbringing included modest means, and he has described a childhood in which access to equipment and resources was limited. A coach named Jagjit Singh recognized his potential and helped him gain admission to a hockey academy in Ludhiana, a step that set him on the path to professional hockey.

Career
Sardar Singh developed into one of India’s best-known midfielders. He made his junior international debut during India’s 2003–04 tour of Poland and progressed to a senior debut against Pakistan in 2006. He became the youngest captain of the Indian national team when he led the side at the 2008 Sultan Azlan Shah Cup and subsequently captained India for an extended period from 2008 until 2016.

On the domestic and club front, his career included spells with Chandigarh Dynamos in 2005 and Hyderabad Sultans from 2006 to 2008. He later played in Europe and in India’s franchise league, representing KHC Leuven in 2011, HC Bloemendaal in 2013, Delhi Waveriders from 2013 to 2015, and Punjab Warriors in 2016. At the inaugural Hockey India League auction, he was the highest-paid player when the Delhi franchise bought him for US $78,000 (₹42.49 lakh).

Sardar was part of a number of significant Indian team achievements. Under his leadership and participation, India earned silver medals at the Commonwealth Games in 2010 and 2014, gold at the 2014 Asian Games, bronze at the 2010 Asian Games, and podium finishes in continental and world events including Asia Cup golds and other medals. India also won a silver at the 2018 FIH Champions Trophy and a bronze at the 2015 World League Final in Raipur during periods when he was a team member.
