Early life and backgroundSathiyan Gnanasekaran was born on 8 January 1993 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. He grew up in Chennai and attended Kola Perumal Chetty Vaishnav Senior Secondary School before studying information technology at St. Joseph’s College of Engineering, Chennai, where he completed a BTech in Information Technology. Sathiyan began playing table tennis as a school hobby and progressed through inter-school events, where his potential attracted the attention of former Indian player Subramanian Raman.
Under Raman’s guidance Sathiyan moved from casual play to structured training. He represented India internationally for the first time at the 2011 World Junior Championships, where he helped the team win a bronze medal. His family includes his mother Malarkodi Gnanasekaran and two elder sisters, Divya and Rekha; Sathiyan lost his father to cancer in 2015 and lives with his mother in Chennai.
Career
Sathiyan is a right-handed player who uses the shakehand grip. He developed his game further with training stints overseas, including time in Germany, and began making steady inroads on the professional circuit.
He won his first ITTF pro singles title at the Belgium Open in 2016 and added a second ITTF Challenge singles title in Spain in 2017. Those results helped establish him as a regular presence on the international tour. In 2017 he also earned medals in doubles events at major ITTF tournaments, and continued to collect podium placings across singles and doubles in the following years.
At the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast Sathiyan was part of the Indian men’s team that won gold. He also won silver in men’s doubles and bronze in mixed doubles at the same Games. That year he made his Asian Games debut in Jakarta as a member of the Indian men’s team that won a bronze medal.
Sathiyan continued to notch notable results in 2019, including reaching the quarterfinals of the Asian Table Tennis Championships in men’s singles — a milestone for Indian paddlers at that event — and earning medals on the ITTF World Tour. He partnered with Achanta Sharath Kamal to win a silver medal in men’s doubles at the 2020 ITTF World Tour event in Hungary.
His consistent performances on the ITTF circuit led to selection for India’s Olympic team for the Tokyo 2020 Games, where he competed in the men’s singles event. Sathiyan was defeated in the second round by Lam Siu-hang of Hong Kong.
Across his career through 2021, Sathiyan compiled more than six hundred professional matches, winning a majority of them. He earned several individual honors as well, including the Arjuna Award in 2018 and recognition as the TOISA Table Tennis Player of the Year (jury choice).
Public profile
Sathiyan achieved a career-best world ranking when he became the first Indian paddler to break into the ITTF world top 25, reaching 24th in 2019. He is known for balancing competitive sport with a professional role off the table: he works as a Senior Executive in Human Resources with Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Ltd. in Chennai.
During the COVID-19 pandemic Sathiyan adapted his training to maintain form, setting up practice space at home, importing training equipment, and arranging practice partners to keep sharp while tournament schedules were disrupted. He is also part of a group of athletes supported by the GoSports Foundation through the Rahul Dravid Athlete Mentorship Programme.
Latest updates
As of 2021 Sathiyan’s match record listed over 600 professional matches with more wins than losses. He remains based in Chennai and continues to compete internationally while holding his role at ONGC.
