Satish Kaul was an Indian film and television actor known for a long career in Hindi and Punjabi cinema and for his role as Indradev in the 1988 TV serial.

Early life and background

Satish Kaul was born on 8 September 1946 in Srinagar. He attended National High School in Srinagar and later trained at the Film and Television Institute of India in Pune, where he earned a diploma. He was the son of Mohan Lal Aima, a Kashmiri music composer and singer, and had a sister named Sushma, who is also noted as an actor.

Career

Kaul built a career across both Hindi and Punjabi films as well as television. He is widely remembered for portraying Indradev in the 1988 DD National production of Mahabharat. His film work spanned several decades and included Hindi titles such as Dawat (1974), Ram Lakhan (1989), and multiple films released in the late 1990s like Pyaar To Hona Hi Tha (1998), Aunty No. 1 (1998) and Zanjeer (1998).

In Punjabi cinema he was a prolific performer, appearing in more than 100 films. Some of the Punjabi titles associated with him include Dera Aashiqan Da (1979), Mutiyaar (1979), Sheran De Putt Sher (1990), Saunh Menu Punjab Di (1991), Fer Mamla Gadbad Gadbad (2013), and Aazaadi: The Freedom (2015). For his long service to Punjabi film he was honored with the PTC lifetime achievement award in 2011.

Later in his career Kaul ran an acting school in Ludhiana. Financial difficulties led to the closure of that school, and he publicly discussed the impact those struggles had on his health and circumstances in later years.

His sister reported that he had been unwell for several days with a fever before being admitted to Shri Rama Charitable Hospital and testing positive for coronavirus. The cause of death was recorded as complications from COVID-19.
