Satish Ray was born on 23 July 1994 in Chapra, Bihar. He grew up in a small-town environment and completed his schooling at Shiv Nandan Baldev High School in Chapra. Ray has described a modest childhood: he attended a village school that lacked basic facilities, walked several kilometers to reach class, and completed much of his early study by lantern light. He attributes an early love of literature to his father, who read widely in Hindi, and by the third standard Satish had already read Munshi Premchand's Godan. He wrote his first story while in ninth grade.

After finishing school Ray earned a B.Tech degree from YMCA Institute of Engineering, Faridabad. Following graduation he moved to Mumbai to pursue work in the creative field.
