Early life and background

Saumya Vishwanathan was born on 8 December 1982 in New Delhi and grew up in the city she called home. Her father, M.K. Vishwanathan, hailed from Kuttippuram, Kerala and worked at Voltas. Her mother, Madhavi Vishwanathan, worked as a lecturer at Delhi University before moving to a role in the private sector. Saumya had a sister, Shubha Viswanath, who lives in Nairobi, Kenya.

Saumya completed a bachelor's degree in journalism at Kamala Nehru College, University of Delhi, and went on to pursue postgraduate studies in broadcast journalism at the Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC).

Career

Saumya trained as a broadcast journalist and worked in television news. Early in her career she was associated with CNN-IBN. In February 2008 she joined the channel Headlines Today as a news producer. Her role placed her at the centre of breaking news coverage and newsroom operations.

Death and investigation

On 30 September 2008 Saumya Vishwanathan was shot while driving her car on Nelson Mandela Marg in New Delhi. She had been returning from work after staying late to help with coverage of two bomb blast stories. The attackers followed her vehicle, opened fire and she sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the head. Her car struck a divider and was found shortly before 4:00 a.m.; she was taken to AIIMS where she was pronounced dead. The Delhi Police led the investigation.

The inquiry into her killing later intersected with investigations into other violent crimes in South Delhi. Police work on a separate case involving the murder and robbery of another woman, Jigisha Ghosh, produced leads — including CCTV footage and gym inquiries — that helped identify members of a gang. During interrogation, one accused admitted involvement in Saumya's killing. Over the years multiple suspects were arrested and charged. In 2017 a trial court handed down sentences in the related cases; the Delhi High Court later commuted some of those sentences. On 13 October 2023 a Delhi court convicted five men in connection with Saumya’s murder, with four held guilty of murder and a fifth convicted for receiving stolen property.
