Saurabh Bhardwaj Biography

Saurabh Bhardwaj is an Indian politician and former software engineer from New Delhi. A member of the Aam Aadmi Party, he has represented the Greater Kaila

Early life and background

Saurabh Bhardwaj was born in December 1979 in New Delhi and grew up in the city he still calls home. He studied engineering, earning a degree in computer science engineering, and later added a law degree to his qualifications. His higher education included time at Bharati Vidyapeeth's College of Engineering (under Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University) and Osmania University. Bhardwaj has described interests in writing and reading, and he follows Punjabi cuisine among his food preferences.

Career

Bhardwaj began his professional life as a software engineer. Early roles included work with Invensys (now Schneider Electric) in Hyderabad and later with Johnson Controls in India, where he gained technical experience in microchips and coding. He left his software career in 2013 to enter politics with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).

His electoral career has been focused on the Greater Kailash constituency in Delhi. He first won election to the Delhi Legislative Assembly in 2013. After the formation of the Arvind Kejriwal government, Bhardwaj served as a cabinet minister from 28 December 2013 until 14 February 2014. He retained his seat in the 2015 assembly elections and was elected for a third term from Greater Kailash in 2020. On 9 March 2023 he was sworn in again as a minister in the Delhi government.

Within AAP, Bhardwaj has also held party roles; in 2017 he was appointed the party’s chief spokesperson. That year he drew public attention for comments he made about electronic voting machines, arguing they could be tampered with. The Election Commission later responded to those claims by noting the confidentiality and supervision under which EVMs are produced and maintained.

Public profile

Bhardwaj’s public image combines his technical background with his political work. He has been recognized within media and civic circles: in 2017 he received an MLA of the Year award from the Hindi daily Dainik Prayukti. His known associates in politics include senior AAP leaders such as Arvind Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia, whom he lists among his preferred politicians.

Personal life

Bhardwaj is married to Shivani Bhardwaj. He comes from a family headed by his father, Rajender Pal. He identifies as Hindu and is of the Brahmin caste. Practical details include an approximate height of 175 cm (about 5'9") and a weight around 65 kg (143 lbs). He has listed ownership of vehicles including a Maruti Suzuki WagonR and motorcycles such as a Royal Enfield and a Yamaha Enticer.
