Saurabh Chaudhary Biography

Saurabh Chaudhary is an Indian 10m air pistol shooter from Kalina village, Meerut, Uttar Pradesh. A prodigious talent who rose through local shooting clubs

Early life and background

Saurabh Chaudhary was born on 12 May 2002 in Kalina village, Meerut, Uttar Pradesh. He grew up in a farming family; his father is Jagmohan Singh Chaudhary and his mother is Brajesh Devi. Saurabh has two older siblings, an elder brother Nitin and an elder sister Sakshi. He attended Guru Govind Singh Public School in Rohta, Uttar Pradesh.

From a young age he was drawn to the shooting games at village fairs, and that interest led him to the Veer Shahmal Rifle Club in Binauli, Baghpat. He began travelling daily by bus with a friend to practise at the range, which was about 15 km from his home. His early coach at the club was Amit Sheoran, who worked with him on building the strength and discipline needed for competitive shooting. The family pooled resources to support Saurabh’s pursuit of the sport; his father took a loan to buy him a pistol so he could practise more consistently at home.

Career

Saurabh made his international debut at the Asian Championships in Tehran in 2016. Competing in 10m air pistol events, he progressed quickly through junior ranks to senior competition. In 2017 he defeated established shooters in domestic competition, and in December of that year he qualified for the Youth Olympic Games by winning gold at the Asia Youth Olympic qualification round.

The year 2018 was a breakout period for him. He won multiple junior and senior medals across international events, including gold at the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, gold at the World Junior Championship in Changwon, and gold in the 10m air pistol at the Asian Games in Palembang with a Games-record final score of 240.7. That victory at the Asian Games brought wide attention and congratulations from prominent figures in Indian sport.

Across 2018 and 2019 he collected medals at ISSF Junior World Cup stages and ISSF World Cups in cities such as Suhl, New Delhi, Munich and Rio de Janeiro, contributing in individual, mixed team and team junior events. Notable achievements include a best junior final score of 243.7 at an ISSF Junior World Cup in Germany and selection in the Olympic quota for the 10m air pistol event at Tokyo 2020 (the Games were held in 2021).

His coaches have included Amit Sheoran and Jaspal Rana. Saurabh has trained with the Veer Sahamal Rifle Club and has represented India at multiple ISSF World Cups, World Championships, the Asian Championships, the Youth Olympic Games and the Asian Games.
