Early life and background

Saurabh Kumar was born on 1 May 1993 in Baraut, a town in the Baghpat/Meerut region of Uttar Pradesh. He grew up in a sporting household; his father played kabaddi in their village. Saurabh travelled regularly to Delhi for coaching sessions at the National Stadium during his formative years, often making long commutes from Baraut. His family supported his cricketing ambitions throughout his early training.

Career

Saurabh began his professional cricket career after joining the Indian Air Force and initially played domestic cricket for the Services team. He made his first-class debut for Services against Uttar Pradesh in the 2014/15 Ranji Trophy season.

A strong debut season for Services saw him contribute both with ball and bat, which led to an opportunity with the Uttar Pradesh state team. On his debut for Uttar Pradesh he delivered a ten-wicket match haul, an early sign of the impact he would have in the domestic circuit.

Saurabh bowls slow left-arm orthodox and bats left-handed, filling the role of a bowling all-rounder. Across first-class cricket he has been a prolific wicket-taker: in 44 matches he has taken 192 wickets at an average of 23.4 and an economy of 2.70. His first-class record includes 16 five-wicket hauls and six ten-wicket match hauls. With the bat he has contributed 1,549 runs at an average of 29.78, including two centuries and eight half-centuries, with a highest score of 133.

Memorable performances in the Ranji Trophy include a six-wicket innings against Karnataka and a standout match in December 2018 against Haryana, when he claimed 14 wickets (7 in each innings) for 65 runs in the match — a performance that ranked among the best bowling figures for Uttar Pradesh in Ranji Trophy history and earned him the Player of the Match award.

In limited-overs formats he has also been effective. He debuted in List A cricket for Uttar Pradesh in the Vijay Hazare Trophy on 10 December 2015 and picked up two wickets. Over 25 List A matches he has taken 37 wickets, with best figures of 6/25. In T20s he made his debut for Uttar Pradesh in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy on 8 January 2016; across 28 T20 appearances he has taken 21 wickets with a best of 5/28.

Saurabh's domestic performances earned him recognition beyond state cricket. He was named to the India Blue squad for the 2018-19 Duleep Trophy and finished as the tournament's leading wicket-taker with 19 wickets in three matches. He was again selected for the Duleep Trophy in 2019-20. He was also one of five net bowlers named by the BCCI for India’s Test squad during a home series against England.

Indian Premier League

Saurabh entered the IPL system in 2017 when Rising Pune Supergiant (RPSG) bought him for 10 lakh INR. He did not feature in matches for the team that season. Later, in the 2021 IPL auction, Punjab Kings bought him at a base price of 20 lakh INR and he has been associated with Punjab Kings as part of the IPL setup. His jersey number in the IPL has been 8.
