Early life and background

Saurav Kishan was born in Kozhikode, Kerala, in 1997. He grew up in a family with musical influences; his grandfather, a homoeopathy doctor, encouraged his early interest in singing. Saurav began formal exposure to music at a very young age and first appeared on television when he was around three years old.

He attended Bharatiya Vidhya Bhavan in Chevayur for his schooling and later pursued higher education in medicine at Xinjiang Medical University in China. His father is Sunil P Nedunghat. He has a younger brother, Vaibhav Kishan, who is a medical student. Saurav is unmarried.

Career

Saurav Kishan is a singer who performs under the stage name Chhota Rafi. He was noticed as a child contestant on the television singing show Gandharva Sangeetam in 2008, where the late music director Johnson likened his voice to that of Mohammed Rafi and gave him the nickname that has stuck. From early on he focused on songs associated with the legendary singer and built a repertoire around that style.

He trained in Carnatic music with guru Pratapan and studied Hindustani music under Bijai Sursain, developing a versatile vocal skill set. His training and range allow him to perform fast numbers, patriotic songs, romantic pieces, qawwalis, bhajans, and classical material. By his senior school years he was performing regularly at events organized by the Mohammed Rafi Foundation at Tagore Hall in Kozhikode.

Saurav has won several awards for his singing. He has also memorized a large catalogue of Hindi songs associated with Mohammed Rafi—reportedly around 800 titles—even though he is not a fluent Hindi speaker.

Public profile

As Chhota Rafi, Saurav attracted renewed attention in 2020 during the COVID-19 lockdown when he posted a performance of the song “Teri Aankhon Ke Siva Duniya Mein Rakha Kya Hai” from the 1969 film Chirag. That video was shared broadly on social media and was reshared by notable figures, earning appreciation from public personalities including Anand Mahindra, Shankar Mahadevan, and Amitabh Kant.

His performances have also drawn praise from people connected to Mohammed Rafi’s legacy; on one occasion Shahid Rafi, Mohammed Rafi’s eldest son, told Saurav that he sounded very similar to his father.

Outside of music he enjoys time with his pet dogs; he has two dogs, one of which is named Brownie.
