Early life and background

Saweety Boora was born on 2 April 1993 in Hisar, Haryana, and grew up in a Haryanavi family with strong sporting influences. Her father, Mahender Singh Boora, played basketball at the national level. Saweety attended local colleges including Government Post Graduate College, Hisar, and Kurukshetra University. As a child she played kabaddi competitively for Haryana at the state level before switching to boxing on her father’s encouragement.

Career

Saweety began formal boxing training in 2009 and quickly found success at national junior events. She won gold at the 4th Junior Women National Boxing Championship in Patna in 2009 and continued to collect medals across youth and senior domestic tournaments in the following years. Her national season includes podium finishes at state and inter‑zonal championships and repeated appearances at the Senior Women National Boxing Championship.

Her international debut came at the AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championship in Jeju City, South Korea, where she reached the final in the light heavyweight (81 kg) division and earned a silver medal. She repeated that silver‑medal finish at the 2015 Asian Women’s Amateur Boxing Championships in Wulanchabu, China. Saweety moved between weight classes over her career, competing primarily in light heavyweight (81 kg) before contesting at middleweight (75 kg) for a period around 2018.

Saweety’s competitive résumé through 2023 includes medals at multi‑national tournaments such as the Strandja Tournament and events in Kazakhstan and Bulgaria, a bronze at the ASBC Asian Boxing Championship in Dubai (2021), and participation in world championship and national competitions across the 2010s and early 2020s. In January 2023 she and her husband joined the Bharat Jodo Yatra by invitation.

The pinnacle of her career came at the 2023 Women’s World Boxing Championship held in New Delhi, where she defeated China’s Wang Lina to win gold in the light heavyweight (81 kg) category. That victory made her one of India’s world champions at the World Boxing Championships and brought a significant cash reward for the achievement.

Alongside boxing, Saweety has held a government post; she was appointed as an inspector in the Income Tax Department on 12 February 2016. In February 2024 she entered electoral politics by joining the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Saweety comes from a sporting family: her sister Siwi Boora is also a boxer and Saweety has been credited with encouraging her sister into the sport. She married kabaddi player Deepak Niwas Hooda on 7 July 2022; Deepak captained India’s national kabaddi team between 2019 and 2022.

Saweety keeps pets and hobbies outside the ring; she owns a dog named Panther and enjoys painting, writing poetry, and singing religious songs at home. She is often publicly identified with her physical stats—listed at about 1.71 m (5'7½") in height and around 80 kg—and is noted to have dark brown eyes and black hair.
